Forums - Sony - Kaz says Little Big Planet sold 1.3 million-- oh noes! Did I win my bet?

First of all what CONTEXT was he speaking in

at the time he was talking about ONLINE....PSN..& its ONLINe strength

then according to IGN he says....LBP demostrates the strength of it with 1.3 Million people playing.

hence he is sayign 1.3 Million people playing online....this figure they can easily get.

yes other news outlets DID report "1.3 Million sold" BUT at the time he was talking about PSN & online strength....so IGN's interpretation makes more sense in the context at the time

Too many factors to call this comment either way.

He could be talking about connected to online, since he says 'playing'. That means that if you don't have an internet connection, and bought the game, you're not counted. They also could not be counting bundles. (On a side-note, FishyJoe, it doesn't matter how they'd want to say it, we have to go on what was said, not speculation).

Things against that could be used copies of the game. If someone is playing a used copy online, then they 'played' it, or if someone borrowed a copy they 'played' it too. But if people who borrowed or bought used didn't have online, then they didn't 'play' it.

I think that until someone actually says the words 'sold' or 'shipped', there is no real discussion to be had here, simply speculation on what was meant. So for the time being, we should take VGCs 1.7 million or whatever as it is.

Not really that many factors at all. Why would they release anything but the largest number for a game? Occam's razor should come into effect here. The simplest answer is they have shipped 1.3 million copies, and VGchartz over-tracked it by a lot. This is neither the first, nor last time this will happen. I think RE4 Wii is still somewhere around 300k over shipped figures given by capcom.

Yeah, but he didn't say 'shipped' so...

You well know vgchatz tracks sold to consumers. So even if he meant sold to consumers it puts vgchartz 500k above Sony's own figures. If he meant shipped it puts vgchartz at well over 500k overtracking.

Also of course it matters how they say it. Like when Sony said 14million PSN users back in november and is was implied that was for PS3 only. However it was later clarified it was for PS3 and PSP. A company always wants to make itself sound as good as possible. It will use the best statistics it can.

Also to people who have claimed it could be outdated numbers. Yes because Sony themselves would struggle to find their own shipped numbers. They will be the most up to date statistics they have. Using figures from weeks ago could only hurt them, people would assume the figures are recent and thus lower than expected.

The only question is if he means 1.3million played online, or 1.3million shipped/sold. One of them means Vgchartz could be pretty accurate. The other means Vgchartz are miles off.

And Microsoft said they "sold" 28 million 360s recently. You can argue all the semantics you want, but thats just not the way PR works. You give the best figures you can, and say it in the way that makes it sound the best. 1.3 million people playing LBP sounds a helluva lot better than 1.3 copies of the game shipped to retailers.

But to go down the semantic path I could also point out he never said 1.3 million people playing on the PSN. He could be assuming at least 4 people per PS3 are playing it and thus only about 400k copies of LBP have been sold! And yes, this assumption is just as silly as yours.

But how would he figure that out?  It's easier to figure out that he was talking about unique PSN IDs playing the game, since when people play with you, they don't log in.  And the 400k would of course be silly because it sold 400k in US alone with Oct/Nov NPD.

But we are arguing in circles, so let's agree to disagree.  Mmmkay?

That doesn't show anything. He was talking about online, psn and it's online. According to kotaku he said 1.3million sold. LBP was a game marketed strongly on it's online features. Makes perfect sense to show strong sales of a game marketed mainly for online features in a segement talking about online strength.

NEVAR! This is the internet! SERIOUS BUSINESS FELLA!

And what do you mean how would they figure it out? Sony is the games publisher right? Which means they are the ones making the discs. Seems pretty simple to keep track of how many you have made. Fairly common business practice too.

Fake edit: Or did you mean with my assumption? Then I would say it is because 4 people can play it, and thus must be playing it!! Yeah it makes very little sense, I admit. I am 99.99999% certain it is not the truth, but I am equally certain he isn't talking about online users either. Way to high of a percentage of users would have to be online to make that a remotely likely number.

Winner.

I really wish some of you would listen to yourselves.  This thread was about a bet and its turned into a desperate attempt to defend sales of your beloved LBP ... AS IF 1.3 MILLION WERE BAD OR SOMETHING.

Please, folks, just let it go.  You're making things worse.

1.3 million sold in two months worldwide is not bad at all.

The original poster just wanted to revisit the bet he had with someone (forgot whom), has he spoken yet?

LOL!

So is it massively overtracked on here?

Also

"Kaz also noted that some 17 million PlayStation Network accounts are in the wild, with 2.1 million of those created in the month of December. Hey, that's the same number of Xbox Live users! How convenient."

I call BS on that, 360 outsold the PS3 by over a million in december ... yeah the same amount of people sign up to PSN as Live? don't think so.

PSN is free. End of story.

Nice job Sony. Wow looks like LBP is overtracked, and Sony is happy with the 1.3 million that they claim.

And so is XBL Silver which those Silver accounts are counted in MS's total.

something is wrong, i dont play a lot and i have played LBP more than 60 hours, so if 1.3millions play 17000 hours that is less that is 0.013476923076923076923076923076923 hours per gamer or
0.80861538461538461538461538461538 minutes or
48.5 seconds , that means that every owner of LBP has played less than 1 minute in 2 month???????????????????????????????????? o.0

It's not even worth arguing, people will believe whatever they want to believe. Look how many times I've argued that corporate reports are shipped numbers, but every three months it's the same thing, someone want to believe the numbers are sold to consumer.

I assume shipped unless it's explicitly stated otherwise. Since there seems to be no explicit statement otherwise, I assume this number is shipped. I'm not saying I'm always right, but this is my policy when it comes to PR statements. I've seen enough PR to realize that they will push the limits as far as it will go to make their product sound as successful as possible. That's their job.

If you want to believe otherwise, I'm not going to argue with you since it would be like arguing with a brick wall.
