Forums - Sony - Kaz says Little Big Planet sold 1.3 million-- oh noes! Did I win my bet?

I'd say with the statement from IGN, that very specific quote from variety, and the sales numbers from NPD/GFK/Famitsu, I think we can safely say that it really was online players.

Yep, but now we can argue about how many PS3's have people playing with multiple accounts.  GO!!!

lt's not... instead lets just assume 500k people either A. got this game recently as a present or trough their Gift Cards and hasn't had time to play it yet. B. Aren't connected to the internet (I know I just connect to the internet 2 days ago and had the game since christmas) C. Parents have the main account on the Ps3 and don't let their kids have a PSN ID.

I guess the game was substantially over tracked then?

Given Kaz would be talking shipped sales (and he CLEARLY said sales) and VGC tracks sold to consumers, it appears we are over tracking by upwards of 700k depending on stock on shelves.

The game still did well for what it was, but it's nowhere near the PS3 savior it was hyped up to be. Especially now.

Someone got owned.

That's what happens when you jump to conclusions over a vaguely worded blurb.  :P

Variety says that the 1.3 million figure does not mean 1.3 million copies sold, and makes a note to specifically state that "1.3 million unique users have played Little Big Planet"

Oh noes again!

People either have to trust Variety, the very publication people have been damning for months, or say it's sold!

I love scotch

There's a difference between trusting their opinion, and trusting their citation of somebody else.  :P

Either way, Variety makes three different plubications saying similar things.

Variety:

-More than 1.3 million "unique users" have played "LittleBigPlanet." Note that this is not the same as Sony saying it has sold 1.3 million units of the game. There are more than 300,000 user-created levels already. It would take two straight years, non-stop, to play them all.

And they even pointed that out specifically because sites like GameSpot have translated that figure as meaning 1.3 million copies sold.

VentureBeat.com:

Still, Hirai said it has added 2.1 million accounts in the last couple of months. He’s showing off a PS 3 exclusive game from November, LittleBigPlanet, and is praising its appeal to the mass market. It’s being played online now by 1.3 million people. There are now 300,000 levels available, thanks to user-generated content for this game. That’s pretty impressive

IGN:

9:44: Hirai talks PSN. 17 million registered accounts all over the world. 2.1 million new accounts in the last month. Talks about LittleBigPlanet as great example of Sony's PSN flexibility in motion. Says 1.3 million people playing LBP. 300,000 levels online Brief demo.

Face it, you lost your bet.

What a mess. "Others" numbers can't really be overtracked because we have seen how well it has been tracking and can compare to other games, so it comes down to the Americas.

I suppose we should wait for NPD results to settle this?

NPD has the game at 356k in USA already. The difference between these numbers and VGC's is 500k. You expect NA numbers adjusted down to 300k? ;)

I never said USA would account for the entire overtracking, but I would not be surprised if LBP is overtracked in USA, just like it originally was.
