Forums - Sony - 160GB PS3 has to make a profit for Sony

I read an article someplace that trans atlantic freight costs are now 90% below last years(2007) due to recession and reduced traffic. Im sure thats helping all the console manufacturers a lot.. along with low fuel prices..

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

Around the Network

I'm hoping that they make money off it. In Canada, despite the exchange rate, the 80 gig version is $399 at wall mart but the 160 gig is $517. I think it should match the US price for both consoles. I think that the lost opportunity sales of Uncharted are negated by the fact that anyone who plays this awesome game is definately going to be picking up the sequel when it comes out. A good move for sony.

this is one messed up thread...

Anyways We'll find out if they are selling them at a loss still by looking at the financials. As pointed out above by NJ5, the cost is for the console only. So you still need to factor in all the other costs associated with selling the console.

I'm sure they are getting closer, but until Sony announces they broke even, or they post healthy profits in the games division, I can't really believe they are making money on them.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

The reason I can come up with this conclusion is the fact the price is set at $499 and the individual components of the 80GB model cost $448 according to iSuppli.

Using resources like NewEgg.com I compared the prices of a 80GB HDD and a 160HDD and found at most there is a $10 difference in cost. Add in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune's disc cost at about $1* or less and Pain's price of $9.99 than adding isuppli's 80GB model cost, and $10 for shipping and $30 for the retailer's pocket and $15 for assembly costs (includes machine related costs and labour) and $15 for a share of the total advertising for the PS#

I can estimate the cost of the 160G model costing Sony about $539.

So doing quick math $499 - $539 = $-40.

So Sony makes roughly $40 loss off of every 160GB model sold.

* - estimating replication costs due to the game making a profit.

Fixed, sorry champ, the isuppli numbers are not the whole story

Disclaimer: All the numbers I used were pulled out of my arse, I do not infact assert that Sony loses exactly $40 on each 160 gb PS3 sold, or even that they do for certain lose any money. My point is that the $30 figure and the method upon which the OP arrived at it are invalid

Sony are NOT breaking even....

The minute they do they will scream it from the rooftops to try to prop up the share price and get the analysts off their back...

Outside of this one solid fact I can offer no real guidance.

However using the RRP is extremely silly. Wholesale price will be typically 10 percent less on a console.
