Forums - Gaming - How do you react to losing hours of progress in a game?

I don't mind. I have trouble completing games because I often find myself restarting them for the hell of it.

I get pretty irate and usually turn my console off. However isn't it a great feeling when you FINALLY get past that level that has been bugging you for ages?

I curse the game and the console. Then, I look menacingly at the game, and put it into it's case. Then, I play a rival game and taunt the first game, saying things really loud so that the first game can hear me : "Yeah, Splinter Cell. Metal Gear Solid is WAY more fun! I'm glad you messed up, so now I can play a REAL man's game!".

Usually, after I mentally abuse the game enough, it doesn't mess up again.

It depends largely on the quality and type of game. As someone said above, it can be a real killer in some types of games.

If the game is completely awesome, I usually don't care that much. But if I'm bored with the game anyway I can drop it completely. Sometimes I get so frustrated it takes me months or years to try the game again.

Losing my almost complete GTA San Andreas file two years ago has led to me not playing that game since.

I had it yesterday with Lost Odyssey. Somehow my last save went wrong (I'm absolutely sure I saved) and I accidentally forgot to save th eprevious savepoint, so had to redo at least 2 hours. Sucks, but I replayed it right away.

If you just close your DS while playing it holds out for a looong time. I had a red light even closed, without my adapter, but it stayed alive for 16 hours.

I was playing Lost Odyssey last month. After I had finished Disc 2 and saved it at the end of the disc my file had went corrupt (or something... not sure). But anyhow, I lost 20 hours or so. I wasn't pleased in the least.

The one good thing that occured from this incident, however, was that it prompted me to give the Tales of series another chance. And I'm glad I did with Tales of Vesperia. I'm unsure if I'll restart LO again though, it was good, but am not convinced it was that good.

Have you ever played a game (especially handheld) for a few hours and progressed a long way, and then turned off the power without saving accidentally? I do this a lot, and often I don't play the game again because I can't stand doing a certain stretch again. I got Professor Layton for Christmas and just did this with about 20 puzzles' worth of progress and now I can't even turn on the game any more. I once did it with two gyms on Pokemon D/P, and forced myself to sit there for two hours again fighting the same trainers because I really wanted to finish the game.

Does it happen to you, and do you play through the game again anyway?

I use 10 to 15 saves per game where possible and I save very often.  At worst I may lose maybe 20 minutes of time.

If I somehow do lose a lot, I get frustrated and sad mostly.  I might put the game down for a while but I'll come back to it and pick it up eventually.

This happens to me when I play Eternal Darkness. I often forget to save, and have to do like 2 chapters over again. Rarr! I did that like 2 months ago, havent been back yet lol

Usually I stop playing the game for a day or more. Sometimes like you, it leads me to not complete the game like FF9 which i've owned since purchase. :X

I usually will right then and there try to catch up.
One time, I was about halfway through Shining Force on the GameGear and had it erase the save because of a static shock. I spent 2-3 hours getting back to where I was in the game.

This has happened to my son 2-3 times in Kirby Super Star for SNES. If you hit that cart accidentally while playing, it resets the memory. He replayed until the last time. It happened right before Xmas and Santa Claus brought him a DS with KSS-Ultra. (My son is 6, btw).

If it's due to crappy save points location I'm pissed off and don't play game for long it.
Other cases don't happen as I save a lot and often.
