Forums - Sales - 2008 Console Sales by Week: Year in Review

Very cool! Doing some quick math on software vs hardware:

Wii sold 168,643,690 software units in 2008, on a total install base of 45,264,914 consoles by end of year.

360 sold 118,959,622 software units in 2008, on a total install base of 26,978,591 consoles by end of year.

PS3 sold 80,325,382 software units in 2008, on a total install base of 19,206,451 consoles by end of year.

DS sold 154,678,022 software units in 2008, on a total install base of 96,688,533 consoles by end of year.

PSP sold 30,805,694 software units in 2008, on a total install base of 42,863,401 consoles by end of year.

This means:
Each Wii owner bought 3.75 titles on average in 2008
Each 360 owner bought 4.41 titles on average in 2008.
Each PS3 owner bought 4.18 titles on average in 2008.
Each DS owner bought 1.60 titles on average in 2008
Each PSP owner bought 0.72 (!) titles on average in 2008.

I think the numbers are pretty good for Wii considering all the casuals, there is definitely potential for 3rd parties here.

Does the total software number include or exclude Wii Sports in America/Others?

I'm glad people are enjoying the compilation! The software data includes all bundled titles on all platforms, because it's quite frankly impossible to separate out which copies are sold as bundles for most of them, and it wouldn't be fair to do that anyway; the money goes to the company who made the bundled software either way.

Hopefully this will debunk the myth that PS3 software sales suck. Good job, SkyRender.

How on Earth do you compile all those numbers? I pray you don't do it all by hand?

Great work though! I'll be looking through it when I get a chance, just glancing over it looks like there is a lot of good stuff in there.

awesome job!

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

The compilation was somewhat by hand. Throughout the year, I've actually been updating and posting the data here monthly. I updated all of the data monthly by going back through the worldwide totals per week and re-pasting the data in since it often changes. It sounds horribly tedious, but consider that there's 52 weeks of data and 10 actual fields of data that had to be updated per week. A maximum of 520 copy/pastes isn't that much (takes maybe an hour and a half if I'm moving slow; most months involved far less c/p of data), and the rest of the spreadsheet is literally designed to auto-update once the data is pasted in.

Neato. Nice work.
