double post sorry
Wow... and hour and a half of cutscenes in 11 languages?
Imagine the voicing acting costs =P

it's because there's like 11 language tracks (or was it 7??), this will be freakin awesome if squareenix adds the Japanese voiceovers on the U.S version of FF13, i usually hate american dubbing on japanese games... espcially RPGs, i mean listen to bluedragon! it's dubbing sucks!

yea talk about a waste of money |
I can garantee you there is no waste of money in doing this. If you don't compress it, you will not need to uncompress it and you will save CPU cycles on a chip that is hard to program for. You are certainly saving money by not compressing it.
Got the extra space? USE IT!!
Xbox 360 can't do more than 5.1 audio, because it doesn't have the space. Multi-language support will be rare as well. Maybe on games with 3 discs like Blue Dragon...
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
This is great news for Sony users, Audio makes or breaks lots of games, lets hope they keep this level of audio up across all the games on PS3. This will really pay off for the gamers that spend 3-4 grand on their Tv and stereo.

Sorry, but isn't the PS3 able to put out Dolby surround sound (5 Boxes!)?
The compression numbers here are only for stereo (2 channels). If it is really 3,5 h of sound and about 4 hours of voice (4500 lines a 3.5 seconds) its 7.5 hours.
Considering its 5 lines of music that means 28350 * 5 seconds, means 73,97 k Byte / second. Means about 600 kBit/second per channel.
Looks like CD quality for each channel for me.

Why do people want compression!!! Compression is evil! Compression reduces quality!
Yes
Just boosting this above the repeat thread.
Another reason you need more space...redundant data.
| BenKenobi88 said: That's cool and all, and not to sound like a troll, but I don't care how much space a game is using...if PS3 games look only marginally better than 360 games, and it's many GB of space different...I don't see the big deal. The biggest use of that much space would be for straight-up music and movie content, like that movie playing on TVs in The Darkness... So it's a plus, but I'm not sure how great 10 GB is... |

But isn't the gameplay and everything else about the game what actually matters and not just graphics?
