Forums - Nintendo - Why do several Nintendo games have arguable genres?

1) It is an action adventure game, with Role-Playing elements. Some would call it a(n?) RPG, but I wouldn't. I checked, OoT is (in Norway) not filed under Rope-playing games. Only under adventure games. I guess you're just making this up, but I won't accuse you of that.

2) It is a First-Person adventure game. That's a genre, no problem.

3) It is a JRPG. You catch the monsters instead of them being people who join your group. Fire Emblem (sort of) does the same thing. If it wasn't for the strategy, that would be as JRPG as it gets.

4) It's real time strategy. It says so on the box.

5) :O You added this. Wii Sports is, as the title inclines, a sports game. It is a non-traditional sports game, but still a sports game. Wait, do you consider tech-demo a genre?

Your threads are really improving, aren't they?

Nope but people seem to use that as an excuse to say that Wii Sports isn't the best selling game of all time.

 But why is that included in the question about what genre it is? You're sending your own thread off topic, in the OP!

Because apparently, tech demo, Wii Sports and Wii Play are used in the same sentence or paragraph.

But nobody accuses that of being their genre. It has nothing to do with this thread.

Ok let's end this here.

Pixel Art can be fun.

No, let's end it by you taking it out of the OP.

Done.

I really disagree though.

I mean, save for the titles you listed, almost everything has clear genres.

Super Mario - Platformer

Spin-off Marios = Sports/Kart/minigame

Wii series = Fitness/Minigame/Sport/Music

Nintendogs = Sim

Brain Training = Mental challenge

Fire Emblem/Advance Wars = Strategy

Donkey Kong = Platformer

Smash Bros. = Fighter

Wario = Platformer/Minigame

AC = Sim

So almost EVERYTHING has a certain genre (the slashes are for when there are many different games in the series), save for the ones you listed (and even 2 of them were wrong)

I'll just address the title question. Nintendo doesn't feel the need to rigidly stick to genres.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

With Metroid, non-prime, it was definitely an Adventure game. In the case of Prime, i would call it an FPS, but that doesn't preclude the adventure portions of the game. FPS is a very broad genre defined by it's name. It's in first person and you shoot things, thus it's an FPS, but that doesn't mean all FPSes are created equal. CounterStrike is not Time Crisis is not Metroid Prime is not TimeSplitters is not Halo, etc.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Someone please clear this up.. or at least argue in an intelligent manner.

Not everyone agrees on the criteria for each category/genre

One person can argue that Zelda is an RPG and another can argue it isn't.  What it really boils down to is that their opinions of what an RPG is or should be differ.

Nintendo isn't the only developer with games questioned in this manner, however it is probably one of the most visible ones.

3. Pokemon is called "Pocket Monsters"(ポケットモンスタ) in Japan. Maybe thats why?

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

Why does every game have to be placed into a genre? I personally like games that have several different types of game play elements. It makes things more interesting. Games like Bioshock which is a FPS action game with RPG elements.
