Forums - Gaming - (rumor) 1UP Sold to Hearst, EGM shutters

Warning, this's a rumor; but seems quite real.

Looking to conserve its resources for its PC Mag Digital business, Ziff Davis Media has sold off the 1UP Digital Network, its collection of video game sites, to Hearst Corp., which will fold it into the UGO Entertainment division, the companies said. In conjunction with the sale, the related print mag Electronic Gaming Monthly will publish its last issue this month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Since finishing up its Chapter 11 proceedings last summer, Ziff Davis has sought to devote more energy to building up the PC Mag online network. Before this, Ziff Davis' biggest step in the streamlining process involved the shuttering of PC Mag as a print product in November. As for Hearst's UGO, the addition of 1UP's sites is designed to further consolidate its efforts to build up content for gamers since Hearst bought the 11-year-old male-centric entertainment company in July 2007.

Well honestly I was quite dissapointing for the recent Reviews from 1UP, only a couple of paragraphs and mostly rants, but it'll be interesting what they're going to do with Hearst (Cosmopolitan, Oprah, Harper's Bazaar..... my, my)

dont care too much, cause egm has went down hill for a good while.

With this transaction happening, we have also made the decision to discontinue publication of EGM. The January 2009 issue will be the final issue of the publication. With demand for print continuing to decline amongst both advertisers and readers and the content being produced by 1UP no longer available for use in the publication, it simply did not make sense for us to move forward with this business any longer.

Good riddance.

I quite liked them once upon a time, and even in the end, i only resented them as much as i resent any other console-agnostic gaming media group for capitalizing on the Nintendo "abandonment"

I was quite shocked when i learned they were associated with 1up. Like i said, i respected EGM, but i never respected 1up.

And nothing of value was lost.

Pixel Art can be fun.

it's true. but EGM has been a rotting corpse since they changed the scoring system. but at least thousands of trees will be saved.

They also started getting rid of the games video people who do the 1up show. BOOOOOO. Ryan O'Donnell posted on twitter about it

Now that's looking on the bright side!

Wait, what was the dark side of this story?

You mean 1up Yours? That would be a great boon.
