Why wont the media mention this? Everytime there is some good PS3 news they stay mum about it but one little bad thing they jump on it and blow it out of porportion.

What you need to think about is the price of the PS3 and thus the price of the games. Of course they cost alot and people wait til things are cheaper especially games because they drop in price fast(just picked up World at War for only $40). So with this logic and this economic recession the PS3 is selling pretty well for its price.

I expect Kotaku and other media gaming sites that usually sprout PS3/Sony negatively to accurately report this news, but fearing their bias I am sure they wont.

Maybe because it's not good news.  It basically confirms that december sales are down from last year in addition to sales being down in november.  The 130% part 100% spin, nothing to talk about.  The 40% YOY is nice but ignores that sales are decreasing and that a few days ago the same man said sales were 60% YOY (http://www.endsights.com/?p=538).

I don't think the 60% YOY part was in reference to NA only, as its only until after that is mentioned that Ian Jackson is quoted, I think the 60% YOY is for Worldwide, and 40% is for NA.

I would rather prefer my product to have a great yearly growth over a few monthly backwards trend.

But then again you must consider the harsh times of the economic recession which will get worse before it can improve. During December of last year more people had their jobs. This December job losses have been at an all time high and an recession not seen since the Great Depression. Believe me, even my own company, FedEx is making job cut and paycheck cuts.

That being said, if we never dipped into this worldwide money crisis, we would see December 08 PS3 sales with a higher percentage tracking.

if Sony announces that they have shipped around 4 to 4.5 million in the last quarter (bringing the LTD to 21.3 million units) ,then I think PS3 is under tracked. 2 million units on the shelves is just too much.

Microsoft said today that it had sold more than 28 million Xbox 360s since introducing the game console in November 2005. That compares with more than 20 million PlayStation 3 consoles sold by Sony since it debuted the device in November 2006, according to Microsoft executives.

I think Sony will anounced 20 Shipped/Sold?

only 3.15 shipped?(last quarter they awere at 16.85)

we have to wait and see i guess.

The "more than 20m PS3" comment is not based on actual data, Sony don't announce their shipment numbers until their quarterly earnings announcement. He's just guessing that Sony will have shipped at least 20m units. Besides, 29m is "more than 20m".

I don't get what they said.

This year is 40% better than last year, and Black-Friday to 12/31 is 130 percent better than last year?

actually you nailed it but remmebr he is talking about NA only not WW.

Nope, that's not what he is saying, look:

(...)an increase of more than 130 percent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season--since Black Friday--and we're also seeing a growth of nearly 40 percent in total PS3 hardware sales for the calendar year.

So he says 2 things:

1) PS3 YoY sales increased by 40% compared to last year

2) PS3 sales increased 130% during the holiday season (NOT compared to last year).

Do the math, it wouldn't make sense - if the PS3 had really seen a 130% holiday boost compared to last year (which means selling more than double the amount of units during the holiday season compared to last year) the YoY increase would be much higher than 40% as the PS3 sold much better YoY for the first half of 2008.

oh yeah ,,,I didn't understand DmeisterJ fully.

I knew what the article is saying ,,,but all the figures that he is giving are for NA right(SCEA)?

Yep, NA only.

So far we have:

2007: 2.76m units (All America)

2008: 4.0m units (All America)

So our numbers seem to be in line with what Sony said.

No it makes perfect sense, for PS3 to keep the 60% increase it would have to sell 60% more than last year, since it actually sold less than last year and it's the biggest month of the year it decreased greatly.  If someone wants to do the exact math they can.

"PlayStation 3 hardware sales have risen 60 percent during the first 11 months of the 2008 when compared to the first 11 months of 2007. Hardware sales data for December 2008 is not expected until next week." (link about 60% YOY)

"hardware sales" is referring to NPD.

I think it's still very good.Considering the competition's price point, no price drops, and the economic crisis.

Your point would make sense if 360 and Wii sales weren't up so much higher than last year.  The video game industry actually increased sales this holiday season, just the PS3 didn't.

It was in reference to US NPD data:

2007 through November = 1.76m
2008 through November = 2.82m

YoY growth = 60%

You should realise that even if PS3 sales increased 30% in December, the annual increase would have dropped from 60% to 50%. Dropping from 60% to 40% only means that December sales were slightly down on 2007. If PS3 sales were flat in December then the annual increase would have still dropped to 42%.
