However if some strange way it did go away, the 360 would pick up a hell of a lot more people who want HD gaming. |
Not necessarilly. A minority, but still significant % of PS3 owners (the fanboys) would rather eat excrement than buy a MS console. Also, having spent $400 on a console would they want to go out and spend another $200 (or whatever) on another one?
Also, with Dreamcast, didn't a large body run off and by an X-Box than by the PS2?
If Sony did decide to withdraw from the market, then some would not buy a console this gen or another one at all, some would buy a Wii, some would go for PC and some would go for 360. So, the HD console market would be diminished overall.

I think it is a wierd notion to think that if Sony stops making the PS3 hardware, than all of a sudden all 3rd party support will dissappear and Sony will no longer support the PS3.
For most 3rd parties these days, I think it is well worth their while to release a game on the PS360, instead of going 360 exclusive. 20 million potential customers would also be enough to draw any 3rd party developer back to the PS3 for quite a while after the console is no longer being made, so the PS3 should keep alive in terms of software for quite some time. Not to mention that Sony will very likely want to continue getting 1st and 2nd party releases out on the PS3, as they are making profits from that.
