Forums - Sony - Rumor: Sony To Close "Major Divisions" Next Month

I remember how the HDDVD-BluRay war went, with suddenly HDDVD just gave up. Who knows what could happen. I also remember Atari suddenly posting record losses in the early 1980s, and then Sega suddenly dropping out. One never knows. However, I doubt the Playstation division will be gone. That would be a HUGE shakeup for the industry if it happened.

I think its Laptops if anything. You know the ones that catch on fire and burn people alive

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

However if some strange way it did go away, the 360 would pick up a hell of a lot more people who want HD gaming.

Not necessarilly. A minority, but still significant % of PS3 owners (the fanboys) would rather eat excrement than buy a MS console. Also, having spent $400 on a console would they want to go out and spend another $200 (or whatever) on another one?

Also, with Dreamcast, didn't a large body run off and by an X-Box than by the PS2?

If Sony did decide to withdraw from the market, then some would not buy a console this gen or another one at all, some would buy a Wii, some would go for PC and some would go for 360. So, the HD console market would be diminished overall.

I think it is a wierd notion to think that if Sony stops making the PS3 hardware, than all of a sudden all 3rd party support will dissappear and Sony will no longer support the PS3.

For most 3rd parties these days, I think it is well worth their while to release a game on the PS360, instead of going 360 exclusive. 20 million potential customers would also be enough to draw any 3rd party developer back to the PS3 for quite a while after the console is no longer being made, so the PS3 should keep alive in terms of software for quite some time. Not to mention that Sony will very likely want to continue getting 1st and 2nd party releases out on the PS3, as they are making profits from that.

Not susprising considering the current state of sonys financials

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

This was worse than anything the PS3 could have done.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

I wonder if Sony could turn things around by focusing more on the PSP and PS2. Surely making and selling new PS2 software and hardware would help keep things afloat. They could upgrade the PS2 to offer downloadable content etc.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Jesus chill out man. You know the irony is he's probably a 360 fanboy which means his company is as big or bigger than Sony and therefore does not need his own sympathy either.

I think the PS2 boat has sailed. Its sales are severely down year-on-year, and it looks like it's finally in fast decline at least in the Western markets. They could give it a shot in the arm by expanding marketing and software development, but that would be a shot in the dark since the Wii is dominating the gaming landscape.

In any case, making PS2 games takes time so that's not a short-term solution (which is what they need right now).
