Forums - Sony - Sony on the brink of corporate upheaval, drastic changes

Now what I COULD see SCE doing is cutting off some of it's second party ties. Most of their bombs have come from second parties. Lair probably lost them the most, but franchises like Folklore (a franchise Game Republic already said will not be continued) probably didn't sell enough to make a profit either, despite (probable) lower development costs. Demon's Souls looks to be the next flop, if it ends up as bad as the TGS demos made it seem.

Outside of Insomniac (and possibly Sucker Punch, though that remains to be seen), their second party affiliates have been Sony's weakest link, from a publishing standpoint.

This, Mm, ...

Right now even though stringer say a focus on software and not hardware is not really words that are set in stone since on the whole the company is not happy with him and there are some people at the top who are looking to get rid of him.

Looking to get rid of who?

Howard Stringer but it wont happen.

hmm, i never followed sony that closely, but my general impression is it's hard for sony to stay aloft its pedestal as the #1 electronics maker of the world with companies like samsung, microsoft and apple's ascent the last decade or so.

the very word "sony" i used to associate of utter top-notch quality, but now there's so many other quality products out there i dont' necessarily need to go to sony for quality and style any more.

the Wii is an epidemic.

Sir Howard Stringer...the non-Japanese CEO of Sony.  I'm not expert on Japanese culture, and I certianly don't want to make bias statements on Japanese culture as a whole, but expecting a entrenched corporate leaders in Sony to accept sweeping changes, which would include draastic changes in sony's structure is a bit much.  I'd more expect them to sack Stringer and go in a different direction.  BRD was his baby for a while now, and given how much was mortgage on it, he probably doesn't have much capital to implement more changes.

And with them saying they need to focus on software it is almost thinking we may have another Sega on our hands.  No PS4, and who knows what happens to PS3.  But they will keep making games so why should anyone care.  Would Sonics games be a billion times better on a sega system.  No they would be the same.

Well, the Sonic games on the old Sega systems are about a billion times better than the Sonic games they made since they went software-only, so your argument really doesn't hold much water :)

already kind of touched on by somebody but it was not the system Sonic was ever on.  Sonic did not transition into 3d good.  The gameplay sucked.  All good sonic games are 2d.  And when sega left the console business it was all 3d.

Sony's upheaval on the gaming (PS3): start giving attention to the casual gaming.

They've always paid attention to casual gamers.  SingStar has been one of their most popular franchises in Europe for years.  Their Buzz series has been around for quite awhile as well.

Exactly, and that's also not counting Sony's awesome Eye Toy games.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Japanese business has a strong cultural difference than what a lot of people are use to. Having someone who is not of the same culture be the head is a very awkward situation.

Dont know i think its not going to happen but cant rule out the possiblilty.

Yeah, I think if anything, SCE will cut studios that don't make them money, sell off a few IPs (Heavenly Sword?) and close a couple of under-performing studios. SCE Bend (Syphon Filter) could easily go, their PSP outings do horribly. They could consolidate SCE San Diego and get rid of NBA, which sells the least out of all the NBA licensed games, BigBig, which has only done Pursuit Force, which also sucks in sales, and SCE Cambridge which employs 90 people, and has only done PlayTV recently.

That's about all I expect.
