Terry Pratchett?
If you haven't read it, read "Good Omens"--it's a collaboration between him and Neil Gaiman. Usually not a big fan of collab's, but this one rocks.

From there, segue into more of Neil Gaiman's work. His short fiction is fantastic, but if that's not your thing I'd say start with "Neverwhere" and then move on to "American Gods". He's a very sharp, creative writer; it's hard not to find something you like by him.

Oh yeah if you havent read it yet than catch-22 is a dam fine read.

1984 by George Orwell is the best book I've ever read

On a serious note I would look into Survivor

OK, I went to the bookshop earlier and I brought the first hitchikers guide to the galaxy (which I am reading first) and Good Omens.

Anyways, you will absolutely love Hitch Hikers Guide, enjoy the second one, really enjoy the third one and can probably take or leave 4 and 5.

If you like fantasy, try Wicked. It's probably a much different fantasy book than you're used to but it's top knotch story telling.
