Forums - Gaming - Sony or consumers: who decides PS3 lifespan?

Consumers primarily. When people stop buying the PS3, they will have to stop making them. If people keep buying (see PS2), they'll keep making. Sony's basic role at that point is to watch the balance sheet to determine when customers aren't supporting the console in numbers sufficient enough to keep the console going.

Consumers do.

They decide if they want it or not, they will even decide if they want to keep it or more on to the next generation when that time comes.

So can we safelly assume that this 10 year lifeplan is just BS from Sony?

Pretty much...

How many of the current PS3 owners are expected to stick with the PS3 in the next generation? Once the next generation is released it will erode the current usebase as the early adopters start to upgrade. Pretty much most people here on the forum will probably be gaming on a next generation system within 5 years. Of the people who don't upgrade you would expect them to buy fewer and fewer games as time goes by and eventually software will not be released on the PS3.

I upgraded and I still find myself playing fewer games year after year.

Im far to lazy to argue, if i state my opinion i will most likely be flamed by someone and to lazy to deal with it. :P

I'll protect you under the Validating Machine Shield of Holy Protection.

Expose your arguments that make you believe that if consumers just turn their back to Sony, the company will mantain a platform in the market for 10 years.

Noooo......no shield can protect me from myself because once i start one of these "Do you think PS3 is DOOMED?" discussions i get a headache, but Squl and Stage frighten me because i cant keep up with them. :I

YOU are not the only gamer on earth. My neighbour keeps playing on his commodore64 and that doesn't mean the console stills alive or something.

sony has its 10 year plan and its up to the consumers on whether or not they go with it.

the ps3 will sell and continue to sell great. right now its selling just fine, this time next year it will be selling just as fine if not better.

Validating Machine SEAL OF QUALITY

They will just sell it at Sony shops then.

The question will be then what kind of market share gap there is between 360 and PS3 versions of game sales. If that gets to 80 or 90% making both might be unwise.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
