You have 2 years EU retailer warranty (so that should go for the UK as well). So approach your retailer, not Sony directly (Sony legally isn't liable for this, you didn't buy the console from them).

Here in the Netherlands we have longer warranty, at least 3 years on the PS3.

Some retailers may try to talk their way out of this, but then write a letter stating your consumer rights and point out they can't hide behind factory warranty. They will have to deal with this free of charge for you, including examination costs, repair and handling costs.

 I LOVE my country! <3!!!

THE NETHERLANDS

Regarding reliability, here in the Netherlands over 250,000 PS3s have been sold (Benelux total was reportably over 500,000 some time ago). Of the Dutch units 68 were repaired out of 1 year manufacturer's warranty or there was another issue (like careless or harmful usage). These may mostly have been people who lost their receipts or their retailers went out of business or something like that.

70% of the failures were Blu-Ray laser related issues (broken motor, lens burns), the other 30% are mostly overheating related (like Folding 24/7 or dust blocking the vents, etc).

Look up your EU consumer rights and contact your retailer.

PS3 vs 360 sales

@d21Lewis

I can actually play only CDs :|

@MikeB
Yeah European ppl have the luck that Sony will replace your console for free even if it is out of the warranty but here in USA that's not the same situation.

I'm receiving the PS3 "coffin" next week from sony.

Oh I read in your profile:

Gender: Male
Country: United Kingdom

So I thought you're residing in the UK... Yes, if you bought your console in the US you're probably out of luck. Make sure to dust off that PS3 though.

Join the club buddy. I'm sending mine in on Monday. $189.26. Ridiculous, at least 360's have a 3 year warranty for when they fuck up.

Write them a letter stating how you are a big Sony fan and that you purchase tons of their games for the PS3 and that you owned a PS1 and a PS2 but that you can't afford the $150 to repair it right now. Or that your brother(who cares if you have one or not) is trying to convince you to just buy a 360 instead so you can play with him. That might worked. A letter worked for me back in the day.

I bought the 80gb PS3 and it froze on the menu screen in the first week. Since it was the first week Gamestop gave me another PS3 for free. That one hasn't had any problems. My PS2 has never had any problems.

can you guys sign up this petition? 4.2 millons and counting.
