Forums - Gaming - The PS3 is really Future-Proof

Before you debunk this as more hell fire thrown unto the PS3 or any other console at that, please remember that I will never post flaimbait or fanboy crap.

This article is here to highlight the many features generally regarded as Future-Proof on the PS3 and see just how future-proof they really are... I wil not base this on opinions but instead fully on facts.

Future Proof Feature 1 - Blu Ray?
Since the announcement of Blu Ray there have been many doubts and skeptics created in attack of this very capable technology, but when it waged war against the most popular HD media disc format at the time, everyone could see Sony meant business. We were about to see a turning point. The war was won, HD DVD saw its demise, earlier than many expected, And this is all because Blu Ray packs a lot of punch - It features a 25GB standard single layered disc and a 50GB Double layered counterpart. Far greater then anything known before. It is the one thing on the PS3 that has clearly differenciated it from the competition since release.
And with the movie industry adopting the Blu Ray disc as their very own... Its going nowhere.

Future-Proof? YES!

Future Proof Feature 2 - The Cell?
Every Console system has a processor, but not many have seen a processor as powerful as the PS3's Cell Processor. Since it was first announced there has been one word lingering on this gadget and it is 'Future-Proof'. Jointly developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, Toshiba and IBM, the Cell processor on the PS3 features a hefty 8 SPEs, 7 of which are operational all clocked at 3.2hz. This means the PS3 is able to handle more tasking operations and realtime calculations than the Xbox 360. To be frank - It is generally more powerful.
Although with all the Pros of this technology, there is one Con that has proved quite painful for the Playstation 3 and its users alike. It is the difficulty and learning curve that comes with developing for an entirely new framework. It is this reason that has seen many Multi-Platform games lose out of their extreme graphical potential on the PS3, and appear to have an edge on the Xbox 360.
But seeing as the Cell is indeed a new piece of architecture it is expected in the next 6 months to a year to become more familiar and soon enough become less difficult to code for and more approachable for the vast majority of developers who are currently finding it tasking.

Future Proof? VERY!

Future Proof Feature 3 - PS3's more universal Hard Drive.
If their is one thing very distinguishing about the PS3 as a games console it is it's amazing flexibility at least in the storage department, The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. This is a hard disk used by many laptops.
Because it is also shared by the PS3, Sony are not in any hurry to develop greater hard drive sizes. Toshiba, Hitachi and other manufacturers have that covered as they too use these hard disks for their laptops, and as people keep filling up their hard disks as games and other forms of media are being released in greater sizes and higher qualities - these drives can only get more spacious.

Future Proof? YES!

To conclude. Of the 2 elements of the PS3 that are most classified as 'Future-proof' and the 1 suprise entry(Hard Disk) I can say that they are pretty much as future proof as 'Future Proof' goes.

You forgot to mention the games as Future Proof Feature 4.

Yeah where are the games for Future Proof Feature 4. If you added an extra feature on PS3 games I would say this is a perfect example of desperate Sony trying to sell PS3.

Let's step back for a second... Up until today, what were the most future proof consoles? The NES, the Playstation, the Playstation 2 for example. Did they have any advantages similar to those three over the competition?

Yes, that was a rhetorical question.

Future proof has little to do with technical specifications, it has everything to do with market acceptance (i.e. SALES).

That sounds like a load of BS. Future Proof? More like Future Resistant. A hammer isn't even Future Proof. No high technology is Future Proof.

Bluray won't make the PS3 anymore Future Proof than DVD did for the PS2.

The idea of Future Proof is just stupid. To make a bullet proof vest you need an extensive knowledge of bullets, and to claim something is Future Proof you'd need extensive knowledge of the future.

It's got some impressive specs, sure, but it's not some kind of god machine.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

Like I always say. As long as the PS3 is future proofed, then so is the wii and 360. As of right now theirs no need for Nintendo to make another console except but to compete with the next gen consoles for Sony and Microsoft. Just like the PS3 was created to compete with the wii and 360. But Sony would have loved for last gen to continue.

I stopped reading right after the link.

The most "future proof" feature in PS3 is its sales. I really doubt they get much better in the long term.
Anyway, the number four would be the biggest "future proof" feature, outside games, which is the ability to connect the internet. We aren't seeing it in the list, since the competition has the same feature as well. The tech isn't anything without the content that use the tech.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

So it can go back in time and fix all of the mistakes that Sony made with it? That must be feature 5.

"future proof" is an idiotic term put out by moronic marketing types to fool gullable consumers.
