Also,  The other interesting, though not necessarily surprising finding was that the gaming population spends more time playing the 360 than the Wii, despite the 360's lower install base. Microsoft can probably thank Call of Duty 4 for that win (along with similar online titles).

Original Xbox also beat the PS3.

Where I am working many people still play Xbox / PS2 and they are perfectly content with it. GameStop I frequent said they all sold out of used Xbox and accessories.

May be people still not ready or want next Gen.

The results aren't really surprising at all. There were at least 50m PS2's sold in the Americas. Wii + X360 + PS3 ~= 43m units. So obviously not all PS2 owners have "upgraded" to a next generation console. Also, people still own games for their PS2, and good games were coming out up until Christmas.

I would still be using my GC if it wasn't for the fact that my Wii can play all the GC games, and I would be buying PS2 games, if my PS2 worked, or my PS3 played PS2 games. Factor in that this new generation is the most expensive ever (in terms of numbers, but with inflation accounted for isn't so bad) and I'm sure there are lots of happy PS2 owners who won't be upgrading for the next 2 years, if ever.

That was never an argument.... at least not properly (people take things out of context on the internet, like Chinese whispers)

What is true however is that of the current Wii owners and PS3 owners, more Wii owners had a PS2 as their only system last gen than PS3 who had PS2 only last gen.

So the argument should not be "most PS2 owners already upgraded....etc" because it is pretty obvious this is not true when the PS2 userbase is going on 130 million strong (and I will scream if someone tries to argue it has passed 140 million again)

What it should be is that most of the current gen owners, were previously PS2 only owners.... and as you can see most of the current gen owners have bought a Wii.

How do they come to these results?? How do they check how many are playing what, it just seems all make up.

If you follow the trail of sources from Gizmondo to Kotaku, it turns out Nielsen (the guys who do TV ratings) came up with this.  How?  Through some sort of survey.  I believe for TV Ratings there's an actual machine that they send to randomly-chosen people.  They may have done something similar for this.

The results are not too surprising, although I am a little shocked that PS2 is still more popular than Wii60 combined: I'd expect it to be #1, but to take up 1/3 of gaming time all on its own is quite impressive.
