Forums - Nintendo - Will you be satisfied with a 720p Wii 2?

@OP: I don't really care as long as the graphics are equal/greater than Wii.

The curlrent global economic recession has slowed sales of big ticket electronics -- like HD TV sets. Thus, adoption of the new standard will take longer than anticipated.

That being said, Nintendo looks at what is "standard" and that's where it seems to go with its consoles. Two years ago (and even today), SD TV is standard. In 3-4 years though, 720p will probably be the standard and Nintendo's next console will reflect that (it will probably though still look good in 480p for those who have not upgraded their TV sets).

Playing games on an SDTV make my eyes bleed. A Ps3 game on an SDTV looks like crap compared to an HDTV. If the Wii 2 is not 1080p it's going to look like crap (again) compared to its competition. Then again Nintendo only cares about the Benjamins so I doubt they care if their quality suffers as long as their profits soar.

I think it would be difficult to demonstrate that Nintendo cares any less about quality than the competition does, or any more about money, but as a company they do have to consider how they will survive ...

People are often critical about Nintendo because they have sold more than 100 Million units of hardware in the past few years, but they never consider the reality Nintendo was facing when they were designing these systems. Back in 2003, 2004 and 2005 (when the planning for the Nintendo DS and Wii was mostly being done) Nintendo was looking at how the Gameboy Advance underperformed compared to previous Gameboys, the Gamecube was a failure in terms of sales, Sony was releasing a "Highly Anticipated" handheld which could cut into Nintendo's strongest market, and Nintendo was facing competition in the home console market that seemed to have unlimited money to lose.

In order for Nintendo to survive as a hardware manufacturer they had to deal with reality, and that meant that they couldn't afford to spend a lot of money on R&D, they couldn't lose a lot of money up front selling hardware at a loss, and they couldn't afford to have software development costs skyrocket.

Hasn't Nintendo pretty much made a profit every year since they have been around? The GBA did not underperform either. I'm sure Nintendo could have afforded to invest a little more into their R&D....their not poor so quit making them out to be.

Nintendo may not be a poor company, but in there is a real legitimate concern that your system will sell less than 10 Million units you have to be very careful with how much money you invest in the hardware; and you have to be careful of how expensive game development becomes.

What!? Other then the virtual boy what Nintendo system has ever sold under 10 million units? Your acting like it would have cost and will cost Nintendo billions of dollars to add high def output in their system.

I don't think console gamers understand resolution.

It's. Not. A. Big. Deal.

GTA IV on your PS3?  Halo 3 on your 360?  Yeah, not high def.  At all.

Graphic effects > Resolution

They aren't bothering to look those things up. Some actually think blu-ray helps graphics, when all it does is increase the ROM size.

Then again, this is nothing new. Remember when bit size on the CPU mattered?

Exactly!  We're in the 16-bit wars all over.    It's just funny considering that people have been gaming in 720p since the 80's.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

I'd probably be okay with 720p but I would assume that if it could do 720p it could probably do 1080p as well so whatever.

HERE is something intersting I found on Wikipedia!!!!
Obviously it belongin the rumor and speculation pool BUT! it is interesting.

Some have speculated that Nintendo will be the first video game console maker to implement holographic data storage due to the recent uncovering of a Joint Research Agreement between InPhase and Nintendo.[10]

Nintendo is also mentioned in the patent as a joint applicant: "... disclosure is herein made that the claimed invention was made pursuant to a Joint Research Agreement as defined in 35 U.S.C. 103 (3), that was in effect on or before the date the claimed invention was made, and as a result of activities undertaken within the scope of the Joint Research Agreement, by or on the behalf of Nintendo Co., and InPhase Technologies, Inc." [11]

from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_data_storage

I was looking up Holographic data sorage which I have been looking forward to for a while now and I hope it kills BluRay.

Hmm after a little research. Nintendo is not listed on inPhase's website as a partnership.

They are current on doing tradeshows but that fact there has been no press releases or news articles since 2007 does not look good for homestarrunner.

You clearly missed the point. He didn't claim billions, just a lot more than Nintendo was willing to risk. And the Virtual Boy was anticipating a market that wasn't there. That's what Nintendo feared with putting processing power over everything else.
