The curlrent global economic recession has slowed sales of big ticket electronics -- like HD TV sets. Thus, adoption of the new standard will take longer than anticipated.
That being said, Nintendo looks at what is "standard" and that's where it seems to go with its consoles. Two years ago (and even today), SD TV is standard. In 3-4 years though, 720p will probably be the standard and Nintendo's next console will reflect that (it will probably though still look good in 480p for those who have not upgraded their TV sets).
