Forums - Nintendo - Will you be satisfied with a 720p Wii 2?

DS software is for the DS or the DSi. DSi software is for the DSi only. Just because its available online only doesn't mean anything - the main reason that is being done, is to not confuse the market (1m install base versus a 90m install base).

Its no different from GC & Wii software - GC software works on the GC or Wii, Wii software only works on the Wii. Ninty could release retail DSi software if they wanted (i.e. on DS carts).

...

For instance, 3D on the DSi *could* look a lot better than the DS. I believe the 3D caps are the same (but I could be wrong) - but it definitely has a faster CPU, and more RAM.

When they do release a Wii+ they will need a strong selling point (like the DSi) - apart from partial HD support, I'm not too sure what they could actually add (easily) - most of the features of the Wii are in the controller itself, not the console. Lots of onboard storage maybe? Hard disk?

I want a graphic update for Wii 2 but not because of wanting the system to be more like PS3 and 360 but because that's the way it's always been and I would want a compelling reason to update and graphics always do play a part!

360 - LuminalACE

PS3 - AUS-ACE

720p should be the bottom line for the Wii the next gen.

As for 2160p, it's not even going to be introduced before 2015 at the earliest, so Ninty has plenty of time to implement HD.

I agree in that I think the Wii will follow the DS 'upgrade' model. They will NOT drop the price - at all - until sales significantly start to dip.

Then I think you'll see a 'Wii HD' or 'Wii+' released at a little over the current price point. Then the Wii will get a price cut at the same time, and most of the Ninty fans will start upgrading.

The amazing thing with the DSi is that DSi games will NOT RUN on a DS!! So it really is a new handheld (it has extra RAM, as well as the camera and other features).

The Wii+ could follow the same pattern. I'd love to see the next Wii go back to carts - but this won't happen for the Wii+, as backwards compat is so important (it must be able to play Wii titles).

...

I'd expect lots of onboard RAM, and special Wii+ (only) downloadable titles. Its a great way to migrate to a DL-only world - have the retail Wii titles, and the online only Wii+ titles.

They *could* stick extra VRAM on it, extra RAM, crank up the clock speed on the GPU/CPU, upgrade the output to 720p, controller will come with M+. Even a 1080i upscalar and/or HDMI plugs, or better FSAA. Lots of options really.

Opens the door for them down the track to release a ultra-cheap Wii+ WITHOUT a drive (might be half the cost, if not less) - DL titles only. By then they would have a good catalog of DL titles.

...

Doesn't anyone think it wierd that Ninty have NOT released any really significant WiiWare titles of their own? They have obviously been working hard on DSi titles - but I wonder what else they have coming. Or maybe they are leaving it to 3rd-parties for now...

The problem for all console manufacturers going DL only is that, at the current margin structure, it would take away the biggest stream of gaming income the retail stores have. Stores essentially do not make money out of selling consoles. For a company to go DL only, they would have to increase the retail margin significantly, and by significant I'm talking about 15-20% increase in the retail price. That way, retailers would be able to make money from the consoles and there would be incentive for them to sell the HW only. But that would lead to any manufacturing price reductions becoming pretty much nullified, and in fact could actually increase the price. That's not an easy step to take. There's a reason why the DL markets for current consoles offer mostly small games, and even Sony has only a few full size games available. They can't risk angering their retailers.

As far as I love Nintendo and their games I would be kinda disappointed if their next console comes out with anything lower than 720p. And to answere the OP's question, 720p would be perfect.

2160p is in development so...I'm not sure how well 720P will be received in the coming years.

Lol.... I hop you realise the difference between 1080p and 2160p is unnoticable unless you have a stupidly huge 80+ inch Television.

an 80 inch TV would be as wide as I am tall.

The same can be argued with PC screens and the difference between 720p and 1080p. Its very noticeable on a 24'' monitor.

Plus, 65'' TVs are now affordable. Sharp has one on amazon.com right now for under $3,000. At that size 2160p would be noticeable.

Sure, but most PC screens are watched from less than 3 feet away, TV's are watched usually much farther. If you watch 48 inch TV from 6 feet distance, you'll see as many details as from 24 inch PC screen from 3 feet distance. From 12 feet distance you would already need 96 inch TV to see same details as in this 24 inch PC screen.

HD TV's run at 1080p, not more so unless you're talking about HD TV's in 10 years, discussing this is useless.

in 2012, don't worry, it'll be 1080P cause attach rate of HDTV will be relevant for nintendo. It doesn't mean games will all be at that level. Nintendo likes the cartoony style, it doesn't requier as many resousrces and still looks great...

Wii 2 will have an improved wii mote (though very similar) but the change from wii will be mainly on the nuchuck.

Nintendo should not have made it so simple... as an extention, that is where they should have added features for core gamers (as more than 2 buttons...).

Oh no, I agree with that, for the N6 I see 720p as being the standard, this was another discussion about an "upgrade" a la DSi to the current console. I was simply stating that additionning "more" to the current Wii without additionning at least one gaming related feature wasn't going to augment the demand for the system.
