I think you're over analyzing something that's quite simple. People have different experiences(some love the wii and buy lots of games, some get bored and let it gather dust.) Then when it comes to discussion on the internet, bias dictates whether people talk of their experiences or not.
A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Obviously Microsoft is moneyhatting them.
The truth is this:
The Wii gets purchased for the family with Wii sports and Wii play for the other game. The husband gets all excited and spends all his time with the machine and not with his wife, so she quietly takes one of the controllers into the bedroom to keep herself company and the husband doesn't notice since hes busy playing single player anyway.
Eventually the relationship starts to change with the wife getting herself in shape with Wii Fit to make herself more attractive to her man and or failing that find a new man and the husband moves onto Mario Kart and plays that incessantly. Eventually arguments ensue and they buy a 2nd Wii for the house so they can both play.
This explains why Wii Fit and Mario Kart sell so well and why they sell so many systems.
Tease.

No, you are wrong. If Microsoft had paid them off, it would read: "I know several people who own Wiis (for some it's their first console ever) and none of them play them anymore, also nobody has more than three games. After they graduated to the 360 they started to fall in love with videogames and now play nearly as much as I do." |
That's what they want you to believe.
Obviously Microsoft further moneyhatted them not to say that in order to trick you. Notice how they didn't mention HD consoles at all. What fanboy can even begin to talk about other consoles without bragging about their favorite? None.
Even as you think you're getting closer to the truth, they're busily erasing their calls to 360 support lines and shuffling the packaging for their coffins out of sight.
Keep at it though; the truth... is out there.
Increasing Wii sales correlate with decreasing dust brush sales.
This is what happened to me:
I got my Wii, and was amazed by the potential. The character on screen did what I did! In Wii Sports Tennis, when i swung, the character swung. In Red Steel, how I held the controller was how the character on screen held the controller. The pointer was a god send in Resident Evil and Mario Galaxy. HOLY SHIT! I gotta show this to somebody!
After a while, the kinks in the armor began to show. The controller wasn't doing what i was doing most of the time. It just knew when I was moving it, and reacted like I was pressing a button. I'd play a driving game, and it wouldn't respond like I needed it too. I'd bowl a strike in Wii Bowling, but I would be in the kitchen while the console was in the living room. The illusion was shattered.
When it's good, the Wii is good. When it's exposed, the Wii can be very bad. Most newbies don't see the flaws. Gamers who've been around the block are harder to impress, when the novelty wears off. My mom loves the Wii. My kid sister bought one for X-mas. I'm ready to see the next trick. That's my point of view.
Personally, I suspect that many "Anti-Wii" gamers look are used to only having one or two people in a household who play videogames and may not be paying attention to the other family members ...
My brother bought a Wii soon after I did because his wife had played mine and really enjoyed it. Not that long after that, he bought himself a PS3 and lost interest in the Wii (outside of a few games that have been released). If someone was only watching his behavior around the Wii you would come to the conclusion that it was just "Gathering dust" ... The truth is that his wife buys more games than he ever did, and the Wii gets far more use as a gaming machine than the PS3 does (although the PS3 does get used a lot as a Blu-Ray player).
