Forums - Sony - Will the PS3 EVER reach 40 million?

DragonLord said:
EASILY...Hell, it's already essentially half way there in a little over 2 years. If they sell ps3 for another 6 years, I would be surprised if they don't break 80-100 million after the price get down to the eventual $149-199 range.

They'd lose truckloads of money and go out of business if this happened.

Microsoft won't want to release their next console without a big title to sell it.  Right now, the Halo series is on a downturn as far as popularity goes and with ODST set to be Bungie's last Halo game.  The next biggest title in the 360's lineup after Gears is Fable, and it really hasn't shown itself to be much of a system seller.  Gears on the other hand has mass appeal and is Microsoft's biggest property right now.  So, the timing of Gears 3 will be what they use to drive the sales of the next XBOX.  They wouldn't wait on third party games as waiting to sell a $500.00 system wouldn't be determined by third parties since those games will be available on other systems.  Market share has little to do with the MS's plans for the Nextbox; however, Gears of War 3 does.  Also, I would say Epic doesn't want to wait too long to release Gears 3 because they wouldn't want some other property to steal their thunder on the Nextbox as Gears did to a bit of Halo's on the 360.

1. Halo 3 > Halo 2 > Halo 1 so the series is as strong as ever.

2. The next strongest 1st party after Halo is actually Forza

3. The Lawlz 4 year console idea has been discredited a million times.

4. $500 System? Only Sony smokes that crack

5. They could sell the Xbox 360 at the same price as the PS3 and it will continue to sell, such is its momentum

I cannot help but notice that others attacked me, but did not explain one critical thing. Where the hell is the PS3 to get these sales. What will be the impetus to maintain the current level of sales. Do not make the same mistake again, and just assume that it being a Playstation means it will sell ten million a year.

The console is out of price position, has the weaker high definition library, has fewer exclusives, and is most likely fast running out of early adopters. Yes eventually the console must actually sell on merit, and that usually means the console must have a positive differentiation from its competition. Basically the PS3 is a pale imitation of the 360. That is a huge problem that not even Nintendo had to deal with. No matter what Nintendo was always a strange alternative. Their first party lineup was a drastic high quality departure from the competition. Sony doesn't even have that. They cannot be the less popular, but still viable alternative.

Why wouldn't it maintain sales?  It's ALWAYS been most expensive; it's ALWAYS had fewer exclusives/big games (due to the 360's head start) but is catching up, proportionally speaking; etc.  You must have a pretty funny definition of "early adopters" since the year we just finished was the SECOND FULL YEAR of PS3 sales.

"Positive differentiation", huh.  Well, it's true that BOTH the PS3 and 360 suffer from that problem.  The 360 has excellent unique draws like Halo, Gears of War, RRoD (oops how did that slip in there), many good RPGs, Forza Motorsport etc.  But the PlayStation has hardly run out of its own unique draws.  From the PS2 era have returned MGS, Gran Turismo, Ratchet & Clank, etc. etc.  (I never had a PS2 so I'm sure you can fill this in more easily than I can off the top of my head.)  Maybe it's misled you that the PS2 had SO many great franchises, many exclusive, that the PS3 can bleed exclusives like crazy (DMC, FF, etc.) and still have plenty left to distinguish itself.  Anyway, we also can see great new franchises like Resistance, Uncharted, Motorstorm, and LBP.  There is nothing like LBP on the 360.

Pale imitation -- you do realize that the PS3 has sold better than the 360 did at the same point in its life?  In my opinion, the worst thing that can happen to a console in terms of differentiation is to become the "odd man out".  So, it would be very bad for the PS3 if the console war was seen by people as "the Wii winning against the 360, and oh yeah there's that other one, the PS3".  But there is absolutely no danger of that happening IMO since there has been SO much to happen involving it.  Blu-ray is one obvious thing, it's the only one that plays it and it helped Blu-ray win against HD DVD.  Even losing FFXIII's exclusivity, a major blow to Sony and the PS3, keeps it in the public consciousness.  This fear of anonymity is why some say "any publicity is good publicity".

I hate to spend so much effort on what is basically an apologetic for the PS3; I have all 3 consoles and have no favorite.  But I felt it needed to be done.

If you have two consoles, both with essentially the same games, both targeting essentially the same market and without any outside averse circumstances, why would ones sales not follow a similar pattern to the other? So besides the feel good factor of making the PS3 look better, it doesn't make any real sense. At this point its up to SCE to keep the PS3 selling on-par or better than the Xbox 360, but if you follow the market trends it seems like the tide is tipping against them.

 1.  ODST is Bungie's last Halo game.  If Halo 4 is made by someone other than Bungie, then it won't sell as well.

 2.  Gears I and II have sold more copies than Forza I and II.

 3.  In another post, I said it was unlikely that the Nextbox would be coming out in 2009,  I also said it would be surprising if it comes out any later than 2010.  Of course until GDC 2009 and E3 2009 roll around without a NB announcement, then the four year console notion may be discredited but not disproven.  There is a difference.

4.  How much was the 360 at launch?  The new console will probably cost as much.

5.  Wouldn't be selling at PS3 numbers though that's for sure.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

40 millions ? Without the shadow of a doubt, unless Sony decides to leave the console market in 2009 or early 2010

80 millions ? mmmh, hard to tell, depends on many things : price, support, life time, economic crisis... It seems reachable in 4-5 years

100+ millions ? I don't think so but hey, who knows ? The Wii might suddenly stop selling like crazy too... Nah, who's gonna believe it
