Forums - Microsoft - Is Fable II really an RPG?

I've gone a lengthy way through the game, and came to realize it didn't seem like an RPG at all. It actually seems to have more in common with hack n slash games like Devil May Cry and Viking: Battle for Asgard than it does something like Fallout 3. The combat is completely realtime, and is purposely button mashing. There is no leveling up system. Just like DMC you purchase new moves and abilities by picking up orbs off of fallen enemies.

I don't want this to take away from te quality of the game itself. Fable II is fantastic. It just doesn't feel like an RPG at all. Is that it or are other genres invading the RPG space so much it's hard to see the difference nowadays?

I think it is an RPG, not because of combat or leveling or any other gameplay mechanics, but because of choices. You get to mold your character and the world in which he lives in a way that you just can't in DMC or Viking.

In Fable 2, eating food makes you fat. Making relationships effect how people treat you. You can marry anybody. You can raise a family. You can be good or evil. You can buy a house. You use experience to grow the way you want to grow (magic, strength, techniquesz0 Pretty much, you can do whatever you want. You can even choose your ending.

Basically, Fable 2 is more of an actual Role Playing Game than most games that fall under the traditional definition of the word.

you choices affect the game, by being either good or bad, so yeah its an rpg.

Is Final Fantasy VII a Role Playing Game? I mean really, is it? What choices do you really have?? Level up and learn magic so you can defeat the next big baddie and trigger the next CGI cutscene? Solve the puzzle or visit the person that you need to visit to trigger the next area. Is following an "on-rails" story really allowing you to play a role? Aside from the side quests that I finished, the optional characters I met, and the magic spells/weapons I used, my playthrough of many "RPG's" was exactly the same as yours. If Fable 2 isn't an RPG, then it's much much more.

It all depends on what RPG is defined as.

You could easily argue that pretty much all games from Doom to NFS to Mario are RPGs in the sense that you play the role of a character.

Correct.

fable 2 is an rpg............its a role playing game............you take part in a role........then you play as part of that role.........and all this takes part in a game, hence fable 2 is an rpg................its a great game i recomend it, i would have preferred a leveling up sytem though

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

It pretty much damn wants to be if the 360 wants to have more millionselling RPGs than the Xbox.
