Forums - Gaming Discussion - Study: Gamers unaware, don't care about additional game console features

Some of the most fundamental, basic features of the next-gen consoles went unknown by the 6,260 surveyed console owners in the US. For example, only 30% knew that the Xbox 360 has the ability to produce high definition graphics. Only 40% were aware of the PS3’s built-in Blu-ray Disc player, and only 20% said they had watched a BD movie in the last 10 times they powered up their console.

 ---------------------

so this is it, for me the most cool stuff in PS3 is linux and retro-compatibility, but I believe that 99% of PS3 players don't know what is linux...       I think it is a very good point to observe, the "HD grafics" realy count less than I though cuz plp don't know the diference...

Well, I'm posting it cuz I think that is important to EVERYONE that care about games to know that we (people that know how many memory a system have for example) are a little minority, for the market itself it don't count, what count is what VGC your neighbour have and if you are going to find it cool and buy too...

I think this is why Nintendo used "channels" for the Wii interface.  It puts all the features of the console right up on the screen when you turn it on.

I don't own a PS3 or Xbox -- if you boot it up with a disc in the drive, does it skip the interface and go straight to the game?

Wow...

Since the dawn of the industry people have bought the consoles they did because the system was affordable and had the games they wanted. People drooled at the arcade quality graphics SNK was able to produce on the Neo Geo but they bought the SNES or Genesis because they could actually afford those systems and they had the games they wanted. The CD functionality of the Sega-CD and Turbo Graphics 16 was seen as cool and highly desireable yet no one really ever bought those systems because the Genesis/SNES had better games than these expensive addons.

The only people who think that this generation is drastically different than the ones that came before it are the executives in charge of the PS3 and XBox 360 as well as their fanboys.

i don't know how people didn't know the PS3 had a blu-ray i mean it's written on the console.

Cause people don't know what Blu-Ray is?

You can choose to have it either way.  Personally, I don't like it going straight to the game so I have it go to the menu first and then boot the game in the drive if I want to play it.

But, a quick comment on this data:  DUH!  People are actually buying a game console to play games and are either unaware or don't care about all the "other stuff"?  No Sh@# Dick Tracy, where'd you park the patrol car?

This survey is exactly the results I would expect.  I knew my 360 would do Hi Def but wasn't sure which resolutions and/or how it even gets hooked up to do it.   Why?  because I don't have a Hi-def TV and frankly don't care.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

I think that one should use some common sense here.... with respect to the PS3 BD feature, most people don't really understand the difference between BD and HDDVD anyway right now. The market is still growing and has a lot of growing to do.

If people don't really understand BD, they won't understand the BD features of the PS3.
