Keep it simple, keep it focused :
Discontinue PS2 early 2009
Introduce PS2 compatibility back into PS3 at the same time
Have only 1 PS3 bundle/model
Leave the price where it is, only cutting the price (ideally by $100 or whatever they can afford) with launch of FF and GT5
Keep the advertising simple - emphasise gaming and blu-ray ability of PS3- show off the exclusive games and their gameplay in adverts. Piggy back on games adverts for multi-plat titles, such as MS is doing now so that the PS3 brand appears at the end of them.
Accelerate plans for the PS3 slim model, aim to get it to the market ASAP

If they were able to do all of that then the PS3 should be able to maintain it's ground and the PlayStation brand should be in OK shape for the PS4.



I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

1. Make sure GT5, GoW3 and FFXIII come out in 09
2. LBP = Permanent bundle across all models.
3. Price cut at soon as possible.
4. $299 PS3 slim for Christmas 09
5. Blu-Ray movie prices need come down before people will consider it. Drop retail price of all Sony Pictures Blu-ray movies. Other studios will be forced to follow.

Drop the 80gb to $279.99 kill off stock(drop 160gb to $379.99)

Release a new 100gb model for $299 bundled with little big planet

Re introduce PS2 BC to the ps3, release a $399 200gb model with full BC bundled with killzone 2.( dropping the ps2 to $99.99)

Advertising costs money. If unless that drives up sales on everything very quickly, it will make matters worse

They need to make sure Blu Ray DOES become the new DVD and NOT the next LASERDISC.

If they succeed in this then all will be rosy for the future.

If they fail....Well the writing would be on the wall

What are you talking about? Things are going just fine for Sony this generation. The PS3 has the best library with the most exclusives and highest raited games. Clearly it will surpass the 360 eventually.

Besides, Sony said they were looking at breaking even in March of 2008 so I'm pretty sure the PS3 is already turning a profit. Back in 2007 Sony fans were arguing the PS3 was already breaking even with such tech talk as is being used in this thread. It's fair to say the fans don't know whether the PS3 is losing money or not.

The PS3 is clearly doing well, I don't really see any justification for your worry that it needs to radically change its design. HOME is clearly superior to XBLA and will sell millions of PS3s. Little Big Planet is clearly GOY matterial and Resistance 2 will no doubt surpass Halo 3 in total sales.

And who cares if the PS3 and PSP come in dead last in each respective market, each is getting all the games you want this generation aren't they? Aren't the games more important than console sales?

Discontinuation of the PS2 is a huge risk...

It still sells at a healthy profit per unit and in many ways offsets the costs of the PS3.

You may end up pushing people with low disposable income into the path of the Wii60 juggernaut.

Discontinuing the PS2 would be another foolish move on Sony's part. Like the poster above states, it would just drive more people into the 360 camp.
