Even though this won't happen to me (I hope), a good example is what happened with my friend and his Sprint phone. He had it set up for auto-payment each month and in November he was out of a job and with rent and everything else his bank account was dipping fast. He decided to call up and cancel his phone plan.
Anyways to make a long story short he made the call and he was told (after them trying to convince him otherwise of course) all was taken care of. His account was billed the next month for around $100 and he did not have that in his account, he didn't think he had to, he made the call and was told they cancelled the account. Now his account overdrafted, he had no idea and he was stuck paying for it because his bank are a bunch of assholes along with Sprint. He had to go through even more hoops just to get his credit and bank situation sorted out.
He shouldn't have to constantly check his account to see if they did their job, just as I shouldn't have had to either, once I made that first call everything should have been taken care of, especially considering the fact they told me that they cancelled it for me and I was good to go. Why should I have to consistently check my Xbox.com account? Why should I have to call 2-3 maybe 4 times? If I want to give them money however, they do it right then and there, but want to take your payments back, be prepared.
