Forums - Sony - CNET: Why Sony needs to (but can't) drop the price of the PS3

Aside from the BD player the PS3 still has some things over the 360 that offer value :

Built in Wifi
Built In HDD (absent from the Arcade models ,50% of MS sales)
Compatibility with PC accesories
Free Online service (PSN,PS Store ,Home ,etc)
Better manufacturing quality (no RROD,no turbine noise of the fan ,no massive heatsource in your home etc)
Web browser and better multimedia capabilities overall
PS3-PSP conection ..yo can transfer videos,PS1 games, even remote play some games.

As for game libraries I am seeing lot of comparisions in the different websites these days ...some say they are even ,some say the 360 still has a edge ....but the simple fact that they are comparing the libraries is that they are even.

360 has exclusives as Mass Effect (well ,its on PC),Gears 2 and 1 (1 in PC) ,Fable 2,Banjo 2 ,Halo 3 ,Forza 2 ,Tales of Vesperia ,Lost Oddysey ,PGR4 ,Crackdown ,Ninja Gaiden II ,Lips ,Scene It ,Viva Piñata ,Left 4 Dead ...and the Live Arcade games. Not bad .

PS3 has exclusives as Metal Gear Solid 4 ,Wipeout HD ,Ratchet and Clank ,Uncharted Drakes Fortune ,Resistence 2 ,Ninja Gaiden Sigma ,Heavenly Sword ,Motorstorm 2 ,Little Big Planet ,Siren Blood Curse ,Gran Turismo 5 Prologue ,Warhawk ,Singstar ,Buzz the Mega Quizz ,Eye of Judgement (something unique in any console ) ,Valkyria Chronicles ,Everybodys Golf ,MLB 08 The Show ,Disgaea 3 ,White Knight in Japan ..and the PSN games .

Everyone is entitled his own opinion but I think the two consoles lineups are right now pretty much the same and it goes to personal likings .....I personally think the PS3 has a better lineup right now because more varied and it wins the face to face impairements (Lips vs Singstar ,Scene It vs Buzz ,Halo 3 vs Resistence 2 ,Banjo vs Ratchet ,PGR4 vs Motorstorm 2 ,Valkyria Chronicles vs Tales of Vesperia ,Uncharted and MGS4 vs Gears 1 and 2 ,etc ).If other person thinks otherwise and prefers teh 360 one its Ok for me but whats not OK is saying at this age and day that the 360 lineup is "vastly superior " to the PS3 one because as you can see from the exclusives list thats not the case.

The PS3 does have several features over the XBox 360, but it only adds value if potential consumers care about those features ...

@ Diomedes, how can the Xbox 360 be more of a space heater when the PS3 through all the different process shrinks etc still uses quite a bit more power?

Tease.

@Ultraslick: That doesn't really differ from the popular consoles from the past. Most people propably play their consoles only a few times a week, but Wii has one advantage, which is the variety of pick up and play -type of games. Most people propably have issues with how to consume their time, when a game that is easy to learn and can be played in short bursts becomes an advantage. I see a lot of people to complain about the number of minigame compilations on Wii and even more how well they sell, but the people who complain, are missing the point that it's the way how people play games.
People who play Wii a lot, may not have the time to play another console. People who aren't happy with Wiis current lineup, then again, propably will buy another one.

What really is the issue, is the bad attach rate of games on PS3. We can make two assumption from it, from which either or both can be true:
1. PS3 has a bad line-up of games (ie. do not appeal to gamers).
2. PS3 is selling to other people than just gamers (which is bad due to PS3 selling at a loss).
From my personal experience, both of the points are true. I know people who have got it only as a BD player and people who have bought it only to play one game, since it's the only game that appeals to them (outside the one game, they play on their PC).

Since people are going to whine and list games due to the previous; don't bother, i know most people buy the console to play games on it and buy them in numbers. The idea was to look at why PS3 has the worst attach rate despite it being so "hardcore" system.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Seriously? Wifi and "better hardware quality"? People don't think about those things when buying, and Wifi shouldn't be a consideration unless you only use the PS3 to stream media over wifi and /not/ for latency sensitive gaming. And what about the 360's advantages? What about free movie streaming including HD movie streaming?

And as far as heat is concerned, while the Xbox 360 expells hotter air, the PS3 dissipates more heat. When it comes to semiconductors, the ones that consume the most heat produce the most heat (generally) and therefore the PS3 literally produces more heat than the Xbox 360 because it consumes more power.

You are not only coloring your statements with fanboy pens, but you're also ignoring facts.  The 360 consumes less power and produces less heat.

The PS3 hasnt got a bad attach rate. The financial info of companies as EA and Take Two put it as the biggest revenue generator and having less consoles out there that the 360 so I think this shows PS3 sells games .We usually only get the Top 10 data for each month by NPD but that doesnt mean there arent many other games selling out there.

Revenue in reality means jack in all honestly. What it comes down to is profit.

I TAKE NO SIDES

The attach rate being "good" or "bad" is irrelevant. How does the attach ratio * the installed base compared to the Xbox 360. They're both much lower than the Xbox 360, making the Xbox 360 a much more attractive platform for publishers.

Further, revenue suggests profit but doesn't mean profit. Making money is all that matters. If you made 10x as much revenue on a Xbox 360 game as you did on a Wii game, but the Wii game made twice as much profit, then the revenue indicator would be completely irrelevant wouldn't it?

In most cases companies brag about revenue when they have nothing to brag about.  The conversation goes like this:

"Look at how much money we brought in."

"But you didn't generate a profit, so you were a failure."

"We know, but it sounds better to say we made the most revenue than it does to say we were a failure at our core business strategy, so we'll say we made the most revenue."

revenue doesnt imply profits, revenue implys revenue, i.e. excluding expenses, and all companies tout their revenue numbers because its always the largest number on their books lol
