I predict that the sony will have made a huge profit off of the ps3 by mid-2009.The costs to make a ps3 will likely decrease even more in 2009. I know that the PS3 didn't have such a great year. However, I am not going to be one of the many users on this site to make "ps3 is doomed" thread. To all Sony fans, I assure you that in 2009, things will be looking up. I can't say that it will be the year of the ps3 but all I can say is it will be a great year in 2009.

I do expect the ps3 to sell similar to 2008 numbers, maybe slightly less if its $399.

If its $299 the entire playing field will change for the ps3 atleast.

I really doubt it will make a huge profit, and it almost certainly will not by mid-2009. But as for reaching the break even point or turning a small profit by the end of the year, I wouldn't be surprised by that at all.

Im sure the gaming division of sony's is already recovering, with ps3 software sales/homes' interesting money making ways, psn sales, psp hardware, psp software, ps2 hardware, ps2 software.

Im sure they are recovering, not rapidly but gradually.

The PS3 is nearing the point where the cost or production is approaching the wholesale cost.

However, any proposed price cut to spur sales will eat into profitability.

Tis a vicious cycle for Sony.

No it won't. If they drop the price $100 like 90% of the people on here think they will......
If they ride it out at the price they have now and let the games do the talkin. Than they will have some profit.
They need there dollar to start dropping if anything...

So if they finally break even, then the price to $299, they are back to losing $100 per console again.

I don't think they will drop the price by $100, maybe $50 before the holiday rush.

Some clarification is needed... What does "huge" mean, and how exactly can we know what part of SCE's earnings corresponds to the PS3?

By mid-2009, I don't expect SCE to be profitable due to dropping PS2/PSP sales and the Yen issue. The PS3 (including software) could be profitable by the end of the year depending on price reductions.

SCE's goal was to be profitable by March 2009, but they have stated that date has likely been pushed back due to the strong Yen.
