Forums - Sony - Do you think Sony will shut down some first party studios?

With the current  # of PS3 sold, it is highly unlikely that it will do double gears 1 #'s either.  That would still be over half of the PS3's sold to date picking up a copy.  I have owned several GT games in the past, I never said it was a shit product.

I honestly do not know how I got so far off topic anyways.

GT5 currently isnt out and probably wont be till holiday '09 so add a few million to the total ps3 and take into account all the people who may have waited for GT5 to arrive before buying and you got yourself a game that will double gears of war sales

1. As of the end of 2006, Gears of War had sold a bit over 3 million units on an install base of ~8 million Xbox 360s.  That's around a 38% attach ratio.

2. By the end of 2009, the ps3 should have around a 30 million install base.  For GT5 to sell 10 million, it would only need a 33% attach ratio...assuming it has to sell all ten million in 2009, which it obviously doesn't.

3. MGS4 is well on it's way to outselling MGS3.  Similarly DMC4 (the ps3 version alone) is on it's way to outselling DMC3.  Why could GT5 not outsell GT4 as well?

4. GT4 actually sold over 10 million like GT1-3.  Our numbers say 9.5 million, but it's likely the game is under tracked.  GT4 had shipped 10.5 million as of June 2008, according to Polyphony Digital's website, and it's unlikely that a million units are still sitting on shelves at this stage.  Even for new releases it's unlikely for that many to be sitting on shelves.

For the love of God, I WISH Sony would close some of their studios. They seriously have a few studios under their ownership that do absolutely nothing. Here's a list for reference.

---Sony Computer Entertainment Japan---
Clap Hanz (Hot Shots Golf)
Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo)
SCE - Japan Studio (Siren, echochrome, Ape Escape, LocoRoco)
Team ICO (ICO, Shadow of the Colossus)

---Sony Computer Entertainment America---
Incognito Entertainment (Warhawk, Twisted Metal, Jet Moto)
Naughty Dog (Uncharted, Jak & Daxter)
SCE - Bend Studios (Syphon Filter, Resistance: Retribution)
SCE - Foster Studios (Jet Li: Rise to Honor)
SCE - San Diego Studios (MLB: The Show, NBA: The Inside)
SCE - Santa Monica Studios (God of War)
Zipper Interactive (SOCOM, M.A.G.)

---Sony Computer Entertainment Europe---
Bigbig Studios (Pursuit Force)
Evolution Studios (MotorStorm)
Guerrilla Games (Killzone)
SCE - Cambridge Studios (MediEvil)
SCE - Liverpool Studios (WipEout, F1)
SCE - London Studios (Getaway, SingStar, EyePet, PlayStation Home)

---Sony Computer Entertainment Korea---
SCE - Korea (EyeToy: EduKids, GloRace: Phantastic Carnival)

---Sony Online Entertainment---
SOE - Austin (Star Wars Galaxies, DC Universe Online)
SOE - Denver (Legends of Norath, Stargate Online TCG, Pirates Online)
SOE - Los Angeles (Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, Q*bert)
SOE - San Diego (EverQuest, Vanguard, PlanetSide, Free Realms)
SOE - Seattle (The Matrix Online, The Agency)
SOE - Taiwan (Kung Fu Hustle)

How can anyone seriously say that Sony doesn't have studios it could afford to lose. A few of them like SCE - Foster Studios, Bigbig Studios and SCE - Cambridge Studios haven't EVER released anything worth remembering, much less anything in the last two years. They have absolutely no reason for existing. Other studios such as SOE - Taiwan and SCE - Korea have yet to show anything for themselves, but haven't existed for very long either. They also act as Sony's link to two unexplored regions. SOE - Austin, SOE - Denver and SOE - Los Angeles really don't warrant existing seperate from SOE - San Diego or SOE - Seattle. After they finish with their current projects (The Agency, Free Realms, DC Universe Online), they should all merge together into at least two or three studios.

Seihyouken,
looks like I beat you by a minute...lol

Yes Sony will close down studios after there games are released. They will start to consolodate there development teams. Escpecially devs who don't produce expected sales. What defines expected sales I have no idea.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

@Seihyouken:

Sony Cambridge are known for the MediEvil series. They haven't created any new IPs for the ps3 as of yet, but they are kind've like Sony's "fix it" guys at the moment. They help out other teams, even third parties, in getting a good grasp of the ps3's architecture. Word is they also have a game now in production.

Also, we don't know the size of the teams you're referencing, nor if they are costing Sony a great deal of money.  BigBig Studios has only worked on the Pursuit Force series for the PSP, and it's unlikely that they are very large.  It's also probable that they are working on another PSP title, or possibly even a ps3 title.

Level 5 is awesome. I hope Sony does buy them. Game Republic is decent, too -- they've certainly made some decent RPGs, and Genji is fun. I don't think Sony would buy From Software, though. They're pretty mediocre, if you ask me.

I still ponder why on earth anyone would be excited about Ninja Blade (X360 exclusive in 2009) -- from the makers of Tenchu, Armored Core, and Enchanted Arms? Not exactly stellar franchises (AC is decent, but the others... not so much, imo).

Level 5 is too large a company for Sony to afford right now, but it would be awesome if Sony did acquire them.

Game Republic just announced that Folklore is dead, they haven't made anything really memorable.

From Software? God, no. Who would pay money for those people?

Media Molecule must be pretty small, I can see Sony buying them soon, like I said.

They could buy Free Radical...lol. Second Sight 2?

The studio making Heavy Rain (Quantic dreams?) could very well be purchased by Sony if all goes well with HR. MM is just a given though, small group whom Sony can expand with ease if they feel the need to, get them while they are small for a cheap price.
