Forums - Gaming - How many gaming studios do Ninty, Sony, and MS have individually?

Right now, Sony has the most employees working on gaming (a consequence of years of console market domination). More than 5,000 last I checked, while Nintendo has less than 4,000.

I'd be surprised if Nintendo didn't take that throne soon though (both through expansion and Sony's possible downsizing/ending some studios).

$500,000,000 per year operating expenses!

Ouch, that is a lot.

I'm not entirely sure it's more than 5,000. The data I'm able to find right now is:

SCEE - 1900 employees (source)

SCEI - 1200 employees (source)

I can't find data for SCEA. I'd be surprised if SCEA was much smaller than SCEE though, so about 5,000 sounds right.

It does.

So you're saying that MS 1st Party Studios have more"quality" exclusives than Nintendo and Sony? Remember key words here are 1ST Party, which doesn't include Gears 1 or 2.

 lol no. Perhaps average quality of MS studios is better, but of course their 1st party department is weak.

This is the area where there's still a lot to do for MS in this gen - to try to beat Sony's 1st party production.

IMO MS should spend a billion or two on shopping some good game developers.

@slimebeast

I disagree. MS dissolved their internal studios at the right time (right before this economic down turn), that's a lot of employees sitting on the payroll working on 12 month + projects. The way they saw it, there is no point to keep those studios when you can outsource it to other studios (epic).

@CGI-Quality

Are you saying Sony 1st Party Studios have more "quality" exclusives than Nintendo and MS? Remember keywords here are 1ST Party, which doesn't include LBP or Resistence series

Ummm Insomniac is part of Sony's 1st party and Sony owns both those IPs

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

so why don't we see lots of games made by sony?

More Ips than Nintendo?

Hell no.

@PSaiki

Yes they do...according to SCE

Brownie Brown, Nintendo's ex-Square dev studio, once was working on a GCN game called "Gofuku".

PS3 games take a long time to develop. Some studios take ages to make a game, like Guerilla Games or Polyphony Digital.

Then there are studios making things like Home and perhaps development tools / firmware?

 Actually, Insomniac is a second party.  This means that they are an independent company and Sony cant control them.  However, Insomniac chooses to make games only for Sony, in essence making it seem indistinguishable from a first party.  But Insomniac could actually make an XBOX game if they wanted too.
