Forums - Nintendo - Best Wii moments of 2008, Ellen Wii giveaway was still epic to me...

There's been a few best moments for me:

1. Mario Kart still proves to be a huge franchise as it minimizes sales of that of one of the largest, Grand Theft Auto.

2. Nothing affects the Wii. Not MGS4, not GTA IV, not Gears 2, not a $200 360. Not even a week second half lineup from Nintendo themselves.

3. Just how much software Wii can sell. It has opened up so many opportunities for so many different developers... Small and large.

I agree with all three. It truly is amazing how the Wii faced off against three mega giants with no real hype game to speak off and it still beat them without any effort. When was the last time a console did that? No really, I want to know.

I'll also add the Nintendo Fall Conference as an epic 2008 moment. It was epic to me because it was the complete opposite of E3. It actually focused on game announcements and was down to Earth, meaning to staged antics, fake enthusiasm and focus on ideas than on concepts. It showed off many new games, including new entries in titles like Sin and Punishment and Trace Memory as well as many new IPs (I hope they get released in the US...). They also showed off shiny hardware in the form of the DSi and even made some worthy announcements like Club Nintendo coming to America.

This reminds me.

I theorize that Nintendo has been spending all their would-be game-development funds on console and technology R&D for the next Ninty system.

Come back in a few years to refute me.

Watching the HD fanboys slowly shift from making fun of the Wii, calling it a toy, fad or whatever. Then beginning with the failed destruction of the Wii with GTA4... the onset of Hate and fear. They despise the Wii so much it is funny to think about a person having so much has for a white box...

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

I bet you half that audience is paid to scream and cheer like that.

The funny thing was that the expectation for GTAIV was really high and was seen by those that don't understand the Wii success like a holy anchor that would save the HD twin's ship from the revolution.
The laughs came from these expectation being washed away by GTA selling many units but selling very few consoles from both the sides.

Wii huge sales were only the cherry on the cake in the general meltdown.

Also funny was the comments of Anita Frazier of NPD on trying to justify why GTA did not sell HD consoles.

April NPD:  GTA was only offered for 5 days so we will see more HD console sales in May.

"I had expected greater hardware sales for both platforms as well, and my hunch is that with only 5 days of GTA IV sales captured in this data set, we may see that lift when the May data is released. It could be that many of those that went to buy the game in its first 5 days at retail were already owners of one or both of the systems and that down the road game sales may spur hardware sales."

May NPD:  Still no HD hardware bump but wait for June for graduations and father's day.

"The continued success of GTA IV is not translating into big hardware sales for either the PS3 or the 360 but there may yet to be a lift in June due to gift-giving for Father's Day and graduations."

June NPD:  Still no hardware bump from GTA, in fact software sales fell off the top 10... But look at what MGS4 did for PS3!

While the long rumored "GTA IV Hardware Bump" never really came to pass, the PS3 certainly benefited from a MGS 4 hardware bump. ... . "Platform-exclusive content usually fuels hardware system purchases, and PS3 sales certainly reflect the impact of Metal Gear Solid 4. PS3 unit sales were the highest of any month outside of that recorded during previous November/December holiday timeframes," commented Frazier.

The true test to that theory would be for Ellen to give away 360s.... I would bet about 3/4ths of them would have no idea what it is. If they still scream orgasmicly, then yes, they are forced to act like that.
