Thanks for your answer. I can't look into it yet, im looking after some children but will be able to give you a full system in 2-4 hours.
1. Do not get a Case/PSU combo.
2. The PSU needs to be good quality (Im assuming the power in your country isn't as clean as what Americans etc might expect.
3. Pick the case yourself, you've got to like the look of it, but make sure it has plenty of cooling, so look for "gamer" cases.
4. If you live in a dusty environment, a case with removable dust filters would be preferable.
Lastly, can you order from NewEgg or do you need to order from a local site? Do you know of any local (for you) sites that can be read by english speakers?
Tease.

Heres the system I put together for you.
No Case, because they are expensive to ship, better off with a locally sourced one.
I over spent on the motherboard, so you could shave $100 off the price there. I chose an extremely high quality one with lots of upgrade potential. Also you could cut the price another $50 easily if you cut the 4870 back to a standard 512mb version.
Specs:
Total comes to $816 pre shipping/tax, tax is listed at $67 shipping is $17 (My Newegg account is set to California, so tax will be different.)
Woops, Newegg stopped responding.
Anyway there are options to save about $150 off this price between the Motherboard and Video card and the system will be about as good. It depends whether $1000 is the top end or middle of the budgeted range.

Actually heres a good one, same card just 512 MB and you save $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102810
And heres a good motherboard for $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131340
No on board video, but it should perform really well.
So with these two options the price would instead be $675 before tax/shipping which will fit well within your budget and still give you extreme performance.

Yes, it will run new games for some years. The 4870 is one of the absolute best graphics cards and the Phenom 9850 CPU will be fine for at least two years (more if you are happy with medium settings in games that come out in 2010/11).
But personally I'd recommend the 1GB version 4870 instead of 512Mb. Games already are becoming hungry for GPU RAM, like GTA4 on PC needs a 1 GB GPU to run on highest settings. Of course this also depends on the resolution you will run the games in - if you have a small monitor you'll have lower resolution which doesnt need so much GPU memory.
Squilliam, about that motherboard... r u sure the ASUS M3A78 will be able to detect a Phenom 9850 or will he have to go through the hazzle of updating the BIOS? I heard lots of the cheaper AM2 mobos have trouble detecting Phenom 9850 & 9950...
I would suggest a downgrade to the cheaper motherboard so you can fit in a case in that $1000 purchase price. As far as I can see it should work out of the box.
Also compare the prices of the standard 4870s to the ones with the custom coolers and if the price difference is large go with the standard ones.
