Yes, it will run new games for some years. The 4870 is one of the absolute best graphics cards and the Phenom 9850 CPU will be fine for at least two years (more if you are happy with medium settings in games that come out in 2010/11).
But personally I'd recommend the 1GB version 4870 instead of 512Mb. Games already are becoming hungry for GPU RAM, like GTA4 on PC needs a 1 GB GPU to run on highest settings. Of course this also depends on the resolution you will run the games in - if you have a small monitor you'll have lower resolution which doesnt need so much GPU memory.
Squilliam, about that motherboard... r u sure the ASUS M3A78 will be able to detect a Phenom 9850 or will he have to go through the hazzle of updating the BIOS? I heard lots of the cheaper AM2 mobos have trouble detecting Phenom 9850 & 9950...
