Forums - Nintendo - Been thinking about buying a DS.....have some questions

I sold my PSP a few weeks ago just so I can buy the new model, but what's the point? My PSP was just collecting dust, and I hated waiting for the games to come out. All the PSP games I'm interested in won't come out in like 2-3 years, so there's no point in getting another one this early. I was disappointed with my PSP, so I'm giving the DS a shot.

1. What is the difference between the DS lite and DSi? Which one would you recommend?

2. Does the DS play GBA games? Heard it does but not sure.

3. Some game recommendations? I like RPGs, action-adventure, platformers, shooters and fighers. Final Fantasy IV and The World Ends For You are a must have.

1. Unless you know japanese perfectly, don't buy DSi (DSWare region locked, menu fully in japanese), won't hit US until "well in 2009".

2. Original DS and DS Lite - yes, DSi - no.

3. RPG - The World Ends with You, Chrono Trigger if you didn't play it back in those days or FFTA2: Grimoire of the Rift if you're fan of tactical role-playing games; Action-adventure - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword if you like hack'n'slash or any Castlevania; Platformers - New Super Mario Bros. or again any Castlevania if you consider them platformers +Yoshi's Island DS - this one my own favourite, but honestly speaking just a rip-off of original SMW2: Yoshi's Island on SNES, which one is a great game though; Shooters - Space Invaders Extreme, if you've already played this one on PSP then Bangai-O Spirits (from FPS genre Metroid Prime: Hunters only worth mentioning); Fighters - nothing worth playing, imo (japan-only Jump Ultimate Stars quite a fun though) +for turn-based strategy fans - Advance Wars series must play, surprisingly very addictive gameplay for it's genre +don't miss adventure\visual novel genre on DS, which pretty much not-existant on PSP, try Ace Attorney series, Trauma Center series, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 +puzzle genre like Professor Layton series or a bunch of addictive casual games like Rhythm Heaven (Rhythm Tengoku in Japan).

DS Lite plays GBA games, so pick that one up. DSi is not worth the investment if you still wish to play the good GBA games. Have you played Golden Sun? GBA is awesome for that alone.

For DS, seeing as how you are a JRPG fan (I think) there is plenty you can go with.

We have (some I have played)

Magical Starsign
Final Fantasy IV
The World End With You
Rhapsody
Chrono Trigger
Luminous Arc
Luminous Arc 2
Valkyrie Profile

Just a short list where some may seem kiddy but are actually quite good. You will find many old JRPG's but if you have yet to play them that is a BIG plus.

Stick with the DSL, the back catalogue makes it the better choice over the DSi. Do you really need a camera?

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Yeah, I wouldn't import unless I have too much money.
Get a DSL for now.

Ds is superior to games, Dsi seems to be superior to almost everything, except graphics (which shouldn't really matter that much for a handheld)

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

The DS and DSlite have a GBA-slot... Only GBA games though, not GBcolour or older.

Also, the DSi doesn't have a GBA-slot! Sadly, but it has 2 cameras. One at the front and one at the back.

Also; some game recommendations.

Wario Ware touched. Brilliant fun for in the train or something.

TLoZ: The phantom hourglass.

Professor Layton and the Curious/Mysterious village.

Metroid Prime Hunters.

Thanks for the answers/recommendations guys. Forgot Chrono Trigger came out for the DS. Yoshi's Island sounds pretty good. I love the SNES one. Keep them coming.

@Euphoria, I heard great things about Golden Sun. That and FFVI Advance are the reasons why I want GBA playback.

I'm getting the DS lite.

^ Then you made the right choice.

I hope you enjoy the hell out of the rich JRPG catalogue the DS provides.
