Forums - PC - When installing ram

Well RAM is the easiest thing to add/change imo so you shoul be fine. Just drop it in the right slot and you're done.

Yeah, i never really screwed with my computer before though.  So it's a worrisome first step anyway.  After this mid next year i'll need a new PC.  Still deciding if i want to try building one myself or just paying someone to do it.

Either way i know i don't want a storebought one again.

Screw that.

What do you use to ground yourself so you don't accidently static shock your PC?

 You don't.

I don't think anybody actually does. I've changed literally hundreds of pc components (at least 100 in\out inserting of memory modules) without any problem.

Its one of those recommended things, you know like make sure you turn the light switch off before changing a ligh bulb.

Be a man! Real men build their own computers! Though they are allowed guides of any sort to do so.....

Build it.  The experience is priceless and the pride you feel when powering it on for the first time can't be expressed in words.

I work at a computer shop and add/remove RAM almost constantly. The main thing you do not want to do is be on carpet. Other than that, just touch the computer case to discharge static and you should be fine. I have never fried a computer component before, and preventing static discharge has never entered my mind.

I've put 100s of units or RAM in in my life without any of these bizzare rituals with no problems whatsoever.

I think it's to do with techies wanting to think or make others think what they do is somehow really important or technical but what they do is mostly bullshit and as long as your hands are not covered in crap and you havent a Big Mac with sauce running down your arm in the same hand as the RAM as you slot it in, it'll be ok!

I think it's more to do with one nerd passing on his beliefs onto the next nerd generation!

:0P

Wear rubber soled shoes, work on non-carpeted floor and brace one elbow or hand against the metal outside of the case. A bit extreme but it's really hard to shock anything that way.

Noncarpeted floors.... heh should of thoguht of that. Need to disconect the PC then.

Also i think my case is plastic.. Which is troubling.

Touch a lamp or a metal table/stool should do it as well.
