Forums - Sony - Sony starting permanent European PS3 price cut?

Hopefully this will be a permanent price cut. Although if true the only reason I can think of is that they realise they are getting annihilated in sales and want to stay competitive.

But to be honest if they wanted to do a price cut they should have done it a couple months ago.

I think this may be a temporary thing.. in relation to the relative strength of the euro at the moment.

Since the euro is stronger and PS3 sales are higher in Europe, cutting prices in euros actually hurts them more than cutting the prices in dollar. Psychologically it may be easier to justify, but financially it doesn't make sense.

Well, since they are making a profit on consoles sold in Europe according to the iSuppli data from yesterday, the hit won't be that big. I guess it might be a case where if you are losing money anyway then you might as well lose as much as you can and save the profits for later (game sales).

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

If true, this goes against my predictions but it will be amusing to see Sony's financial contortions to deal with the consequences of this price cut.

Price cut consequences can be temper by software. Easily. Arcade definitely cost more than $199 to manufacture. Despite this I don't expect to see Microsoft in red.

Personally I believe Sony has  plenty of time for a price cut. Sales are good. Sony sold more in two years than Microsoft in same period. I think they will also outsell Microsoft in third year.

This gen one system is not enough for most developers. No1 is going to ignore 20 million PS3.

So... Why didn't they do this at the beginning of December?

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

^^^to lose less money?

OT:I think it's just your store.otherwise sony would announce it.

You would think that they would do something in the America's first. They are totally getting reemed over here. My guess is it is temporary, and if it isn't I am sure hundreds of thousands of people who just bought there PS3 for lil' Johny this Christmas will be pissed off. I know I would.

good but after what

Yes, please. I'd start to consider the LBP bundle at that price. 299 and I'm sold.

^^^they wouldn't find out .mom and dads usually don't check the gaming section every week to see if the price has changed or not.

They may not check the gaming section, but I would bet most of them look at sales flyers.  I mean who doesn't really?   And if this does go permanent, it does smell like Sony is running on desperation.  They could have just as easily waited till spring and lost a lot less and pissed off fewer people.  But who knows, maybe it will work for them.
