Forums - Sony - Sony starting permanent European PS3 price cut?

So yesterday at work, we got an e-mail from Sony which said we could cut the prices of all the PS3 bundles, following a former price cut from another retailer. I work at the 3rd biggest games store in The Netherlands, so we are probably one of the first shops in Holland to get this news. Below is a run down on all the new prices from all different bundles:

PS3 80GB with 300 Blu-Ray = 277 euro (down from 388)
PS3 80GB with 300 Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray Remote = 299 (down from 388)
PS3 80GB with 300 Blu-Ray, 10.000 BC Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray remote = 319 (down from 388)

PS3 80GB Motorstorm Pack = 333 (down from 397)
PS3 80GB Resistance Pack = 333 (down from 397)
PS3 80GB Little Big Planet Pack = 333 (down from 397)
PS3 80GB Singstar Abba Pack = 333 (down from 397)

PS3 160GB with 4 PSN Games = 449 (still the same price)

The e-mail didn't say if this was a permanent price cut, but it would be pretty lame if Sony dropped the price of the PS3 in these last few days before Christmas, and then put em back up. I for one am thinking this price cut will last, and I'm even considering buying a PS3, mainly because I can get a 20% discount on it as well given Im personnel.

Couldn't really see if the PS3 sales were risen given its only been in effect for half a day, but the PS3 hardware stand was pretty empty at the end of the day though it only consists of 2 boxes of each bundle.

Thoughts?

If they do it NOW. After everybody has bought his presents (and more often than not a 360 or Wii) they should be shot. They should be really put behind the shed and shot. This would be stupidity beyond believe. I mean I would believe nothing less from SCEE they are idiots. But please...

"Yeah our strategy is more value added."

On the other hand I believe it when I see it.

Wow maybe there is something to this. Still think Sony would would be letting people know about it.

Let's hope so.. I missed the Bart Smit (retail store in the netherlands) internet special 250 euro PS3 which was sold out fast (within a hour).. faster then the 299 euro Bart Smit Uncharted and ratchet pack.. And today I saw the movie pack with300 & remote for 299 at Bart Smit.. It's not like they just sold one pack for cheaper..

So I guess you work at Intertoys or Toy's r Us? Guessing that Bart Smit was the first retailer to lower the price..

On one hand it seems like complete idiocy to make a price cut now.
On the other hand, if Sony wanted the majority of the christmas sales over before making the cut, it could mean that they didn't want to sell too many consoles at that price point.
Even so, if it is a permanent price cut, I will be happy.

No I work at Saturn in Tilburg.
As I said before, the timing is stupid but it seems other retailers are also cutting prices and Sony didn't say anything to make it sound like it was just for this week. Though they didn't say anything about it being permanent, but that just seems more logical, right?

If true, this goes against my predictions but it will be amusing to see Sony's financial contortions to deal with the consequences of this price cut.

I think this may be a temporary thing.. in relation to the relative strength of the euro at the moment.

Since the euro is stronger and PS3 sales are higher in Europe, cutting prices in euros actually hurts them more than cutting the prices in dollar. Psychologically it may be easier to justify, but financially it doesn't make sense.

Well it could also be a responce only in the Netherlands against the 360.. we have a special cashback actionfrom microsoft until the end of the year pushing down the price of the arcade model in most stores to 149 euro's and even to 119 euro's in some... Guess they saw that they were losing too much marketshare in the Netherlands...
