Forums - Gaming - 1080p and 60fps games?

There is already a thread about native 1080p games:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=50842
(everything has been discussed in this thread)

I repeat:

Wipeout HD is not real 1080p.

The resolution is variable in real-time... it goes down to stabilize Frame Rate. Read article.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is not 1080p Native.

Even Killzone2 will be 1080i (the equivalent of 720p).

Please keep things civil, no name calling or otherwise degrading remarks. It does not help discussion at all.

It's been out 2 years, devs have had access to it for 3 or more years. If it happens then you can talk like that and carry weight.

Most devs received yet immature dev units in 2006 (the PS3 is complex tech, so designing proper tools took some time as well).

Just look at where we are today already, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune last year and soon Killzone 2. Huge progress is being made.

I am sure you never wrote a line of code and know near nothing about the technology being discussed, as it clearly shows in your comments, you will be amazed how many pages of complex code you need to write to create a blockbuster c64 game in the past. Some currently used game engines have been under development for well over a decade. It took years for developers to make near optimal use of the PS2's emotion engine, well each of the Cell's 8 processors is well more powerful than that and the architecture to be taken advantage of by multi-threading is more complex.

Of course they are 1080p games, they are just not FullHD 1080p games. Just like that high definition camera I linked to is a real 1080p camera, just not a FullHD 1080p camera.

It is common practice for PS3 exclusives to downgrade  graphics quality during some speedy action, because your eye will not be able to catch difference. They use it a lot in KZ2 - that why they able to achive such impressive results.

I don't own a PS3, but from what I heard, many (all?) PS3 games can upscale to those resolutions too.

Upscaling is nothing remarkable, without upscaling you wouldn't be able to get a full screen image from a 720p game on a 1080p HDTV.

Don't be silly, when smeone wants to know if a game is "1080p", he means the native resolution of 1920x1080.

The 16:9 ratio to cover 100% of his HDTV progressively.

We talk as gamers.
And we understand what a FullHD 1080p 1920x1080 game is. And we call it: 1080p.

Just like we call Resistance 2: R2.
Or LittleBigPlanet: LBP.

Gamers know what that means.

Devs stated the game is 720p, 1080i is not equivalent. They probably support 1080i as well like Uncharted does to properly support the earliest of 1080i-only HDTVs.

You cannot generalize people like that. For instance a 1280 x 1080 natively rendered game is able to show a third more vertical details (vertical resolution is the most important, you will have to look at stills looking for scaling patterns to know if it's upscaled or not) on a 1080p FullHD TV than a native 720p game.

Considering all the bolding and colored text in many postings, it seems people are easily upset regarding these topics.

When someone wants to know if a game is "1080p", he means the native resolution of 1920x1080.

One day you'll accept this basic reality.

If you go at the Skate park, and ask a skater: "Are you skating?"
HE WON'T FUCKING ANSWER: "humm... depends dude... right now I'm not ice skating, so I could say no."

Everybody knows what skating means in this place.
Everybody knows what 1080p means for gamers.

The context, man... the context.

Although not crucial, I and some of my 1080p HDTV owning friends like to know if a game supports 1080p, as we can assume an even clearer image.

So IMO you cannot generalize people like that. Sure if a game is FullHD like WarDevil we would like to know as well.

But more importantly to me are questions like: Is the game running at a solid steady fluid framerate? That's more important for me to know than the 30 FPS vs 60 FPS argument. Similarly I want to know: Does the game have high quality high resolution graphics. That's more important for me to know than the exact native rendering resolution.
