Forums - Gaming - 1080p and 60fps games?

@Shadow)OS

That is just a cop out in EVERY sense of the word.  Wipeout HD is FULL HD 1080p (1920x1080/60fps) MOST of the time.  You are trying to discount the ENTIRE game because of the FEW moments it's not at 1920x1080.  That is a completely underhanded tactic and all because you don't want to give credit where credit is due.  Some of you people should be ashamed of yourselves.

Get out of this one.  MLB 09: The Show is 1920x1080p/60fps WHILE improving over last year's offering in just about EVERY way (which was already the best baseball title in just about every category last year).  Just look at all the graphical improvements in those comparison pics.

I know the fanboys will talk about the reviews of the following game, etc. even though this is strictly a graphical presentation/resolution discussion.  However, Lair is native 1600x1080/30fps (with framerate dips) and Factor5 said they don't think they were at 50% utilization (start at 3 min mark). Critics did herald Lair as a visually beautiful game.  Lair had THOUSANDS of soldiers and HUNDREDS of dragons on screen WITH 7.1 LPCM audio.  The coral snake boss (2 miles long) alone had about as many polygons as an ENTIRE level in Gears of War.  NOW, using that as a benchmark, I would say 1920x1080/60fps is, at least, POSSIBLE for a lot of PS3 exclusive games in the future.

People, just give credit where credit is due.  I'm not asking you to give free passes.  I'm just asking that you don't sell things short when it's already been demonstrated at this early stage of the game.  I realize it's hard for some of you to understand how this can be with the PS3's GPU.  It's just that this system was largely conceived from scratch to be VERY different from the usual.  That's why one console keeps proving you naysayers wrong at every performance turn.  Just say the console seems to be more powerful than you thought.  Geez.  The world won't end because you acknowledged that, you know.

1080p and 60fps is not gonna happen this gen as a standard. Well there might be 5 games that touch this but far from being standard.

Next gen this is possible.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Sorry if it has been said already, but there is god of war 3 which has been announced to run 60fps 1080p and there is also gran turismo 5. I'm sure there's many more.

Where was that said about GoW3? I've never seen it, though I could have missed something. And about GT5, at least Prologue only runs at 960x1080 (or something like that) instead of full 1920x1080. Don't know about the full game, though.

Isn't Ridge Racer 7 1080p ?

I believe it depends on whether 1080p/60fps is targeted by 1st/2nd party developers.  It won't be targeted by most 3rd party developers because of their resistance to coding for the PS3.  However, it's more of a skill level issue with developers than power.  Also, 3rd party multiplatform developers aren't going to make PS3 games at 1080p/60fps while leaving the X360 at 720p/30 or 60fps.

Another thing it that games visually look better at 30fps than at 60fps.  That's an irrefutable fact.  The motion is just better at 60fps.

@Cheese_Man

GT5P runs at 1280x1080/60fps (50% more pixels than 720p)...not 1920x1080.  And, God of War 3 has NOT been announced at 60fps at 1080p.  That's just a rumor.  Right now, there are 4 RETAIL games that run at 1920x1080/60fps (RR7, Wipeout HD[retail in Europe, I believe], and NBA 09, MLB 09:The Show).  IN TOTAL, there are ALREADY past "5 games that touch this" level.

Outside of downloadable titles, 1080p 60fps games are very rare. Like Nintendo, most developers realized that there are more important things than resolution even regarding graphics. Of course, upscaling makes even older titles look nicer, for example Xbox games running under the 360 look nicer than when they run on the Xbox.

On the other hand, there are more 60fps games on the Wii than on PS360. That's a symptom of the polygon-pushing-for-glorious-screenshots syndrome exhibited by PS360 developers. If a PS360 game runs at a stable 30fps without framerate drops, that's already reason to celebrate.

you clearly haven't seen wii ,ps2 or SD Video etc on a HD LCD, even on a small samsung 21' HD or a or full HD tv 32'.

it's a blurry mess, and not all tv have unscaling.

Actually I have seen the Wii running on two different TVs - a native 480p Philips 32'' CRT and a 720p Sony 32'' LCD. The image is good on both, in fact I haven't noticed a loss of quality in the LCD.

You have to use component cables, and the TV needs to have good upscaling. Provided you have that, it works fine.

I run Wii @ 480p through a 50" Samsung (1080p) LED engine DLP.  And for an example, Metroid Prime 3 runs at 60fps and looks gorgeous, period.

The Windwaker from 6 years ago and Soul Calibur 2 both in progressive scan look fantastic ffs, so I'm not sure what Jo21 is smokin to see it blurry.

Kwaidd, it's a fact that 480p is blurry on a 1080p TV.  720p is blurred on a 1080p TV.  It is a DIRECT result of 307K pixel (for 640x480) or 345K pixels (720x480 for native 16x9 format) being expanded to 2+ million pixels.  Upscaling doesn't increase detail.  This, too, is a fact, so why try to ignore it just because it's the Wii?  That's 6x less pixels than 1920x1080!  And, people are trying to take away from some PS3 games that run at 1280x1080/60fps when it's only 50% less pixels than 1920x1080.  Yet, they give a free pass to the Wii which doesn't even achieve half of the resolution or effects the X360 can.  That's deep.  The Wii shouldn't even be mentioned in this thread to begin with for obvious reasons.

First up, I'm not trying to take anything away from the ps3, or 360 for that matter.  And I'm not trying "to give Wii a free pass".  I am however,  replying to a direct statement from another person saying that the Wii "is a blurry mess" on even a small screen hdtv.  I didn't bring it up, but since it was...I beg to differ on my set up.

What I am saying, is that I have a 50" 1080p hdtv, and low and behold...its not a blurry mess.  It's crisp and looks great.

And that's a fact.

so, feel free to settle down and ease off the bold text that you were using to prove a point that didn't need proving...cuz I'm not here to rile any teen angst console fan feathers.

No 480p Wii or Xbox or PS2 game is "crisp" on a 50" 1080p HDTV.  That's a fact and beyond LOGICAL discussion.  It's just that simple and it was explained in my previous post.
