Forums - Nintendo - Take Two: We just can't ignore the Wii's install base. We just can't.

Personally I dont want to see GTA on wii. Leave it to the spotted geeks!

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

Although it acknowledges that some of its brands are "not appropriate" for the Wii.

That line is still going to cause Take Two and many other developers to fail on the Wii. The core audience is there. Developers have to take advantage of it.

Unfortunately, they see more of them then of you guys.  And most companies are short sighted and want to hit the homerun with the majority of the audience then to double with the "niche" crowd.

2009 will be a big test for the Wii. If Madworld and The Conduit get good rating and sell well, developers will start to take the Wii seriously. If they are rated well and flop at retail, expect the Ubisoft model of Wii development going forward.

At this point, I am thinking those game or any other mature game is going to have sell better than anything Nintendo family friendly lineup in order to bring the big guns.  Its nice to sell 300k but its nicer to selll 3 mil like Nintendo games.  And that is what 3rd party publishers are looking at.

For goodness sakes, Wii music has sold over a million worldwide.  You better believe a lot of clones will be coming out of the wood works to capitalize on that.

Oh, rest assured, core-focused games can do well on the Wii; I'd hardly call Metroid Prime 3 or Resident Evil 4 failures, after all. The audience for them is much smaller than the mainstream audience, of course, but that's just a given with a Blue Ocean product.

The main thing you have to do is to not only make a good game, but make a good game which implements the Wii's unique control scheme in a way that actually benefits gameplay instead of just being a tacked-on feature that would be just as good or better with a traditional control setup. The other key thing is to make sure that you effectively advertise these games to the right sorts; sales for No More Heroes suffered a lot from a lack of awareness in the larger core community.
