Forums - Gaming - Fallout 3 impressions after my first night. So.... boring.

Well generally if you've had your fill of Oblivion, playing fallout is pointles, most people who've played Fallout 3 and praised it haven't played TES4, and find the whole freedom and huge world exhilarating, as it was for me when I first played Oblivion. But now Fallout 3 is the same thing, only with uglier graphics, boring combat system and a story I don't really care for, the only draw for me is the sarcastic 50s feel, but that's undermined by the whole punk and violent themes going around so ultimately I don't like it.

The game is a lot better then I thought it'd be, its still not up to the levels of the old fallouts though. The dialogue was about as good as a bethesda game can be which was surprising because most of their games dialogue is utterly horrid.

BTW the best dialogue in a wrpg is planescape torment, go play it now!

First off, let me just say that about 2 months ago I bought Fallout 3 and was in the exact same position as you. Now I have over 50 hours of playtime on Fallout 3 and I'm still not bored.

I implore you to give this game a chance before you say that it's boring because believe me, it's not. The beginning part when you are in Megaton is a little boring but here's my suggestion:

finish the Wasteland Survival Guide quests that you get from Moira Brown. The early quests are pretty boring, but it's still the beginning of the game. What would you expect? After you're done with them and a high enough level, kill everyone in megaton, steal their stuff, rob their homes, and blow it up (you get the quest to do so from Mister Burke in Moriarty's Saloon). After that the game starts to get fun. Blowing up Megaton will immediately bring you to the lowest karma, but having low karma makes you evil which is more fun in this game as it leads to more benefits for you. When you start doing missions in Tenpenny Tower and Rivet City the game will start to pick up.

Another important aspect is skills. I suggest for your first playthrough, work on the important skills which are medicine, repair, lockpick, small guns, and sneak. Everytime you level up you can increase your skills and choose 1 perk (I suggest getting perks that help you with these skills).

Don't focus on the main plot too much, as most of the fun in the game is in the side quests. There are numerous towns and locations across the Wasteland that each have interesting background and situations.

I'm not gonna address everything you said in your post simply because if you give this game a chance like I did and push through the somewhat boring stuff in the beginning, all your questions will be answered and you will realize how much of a masterpiece this game is.

If you need any more help check out the fallout wiki website. It's a great guide for new players and answers a lot of questions you may have.

Please believe me when I say that you are judging this game way too early, and that you should continue playing. It really isn't fair to decide whether this game is good or not when you probably haven't even seen 1% of it.

See how awesome I am?

I make threads that get revived after 2 years.

Thread is over 2 years old.

Anyways I ended up loving the game and later on purchased it even though I beat 90% of it on a rental.

I currently have New Vegas coming in the mail, should have it by tomorrow.

I asked for help lastnight picking out a game and ended up going with Fallout 3. Now I did enjoy Oblivion but it took me a while to warm up to it, now I am pretty much going through the same thing and things that bothered me a bit before stand out like a sore thumb now.

#1 WAY too much dialogue. Everywhere I go it seems somebody stops to talk to me. Leave me alone for a moment and let me play the damn game.

#2 Sometimes the layout confuses the hell out of me. I reached the first town and it literally took me almost a half hour just to find the general store. Not to mention it took me a while to realize where to go after leaving the Vault. I hate having to go into the PIP each time I want to go somewhere.

#3 Wow, did this game take a nosedive in the presentation department? I know I have only played for aound 2 hours or so, but I know when I left the sewers in Oblivion and saw the world for the first time I thought the trees, grass, etc... looked beautiful, to be honest that game still does. In Fallout3 however it just looks so dull, just walking around the wasteland is boring and so much grey.

#4 I have never seen a gun more useless than in Fallout3. Maybe I need practice, who knows, all I know is that it is pretty stupid that I need to use the R2 and select a body part just to connect with a damn shot. I don't like taking forever to pull off a shot. Do I want to use Melee? No, that is what Elder Scrolls is for.

#5 Storyline. Wow, this has so far bored me to tears, I am not talking about tears of joy or tears of sadness. I am talking tears because I was yawning. No joke, I only stopped playing this game lastnight because it literally PUT ME TO SLEEP.

I have more gripes but I just wanted to put this out there. I really feel like I made a very bad choice lastnight and wish I could take it back and grab Gears 2 instead.

Anyone else severely let down by this game?

1.There is a lot of dialouge on the begginning of almost every RPG, but later on, dialogs wont take longer than minute or 2, it all depends on your decissions.

2.If you're talking about Megaton, than yes, it is kinda confusing IN THE BEGINNING, but it gets really easy once you go rought town once or twice. And no, you dont have to go into your Pip-Boy 3000 every time you wanna go somewhere.

3.The capital Wasteland is insanely huuge, its just diffrent from side to side. Go to south-east and you'll see ruins of Washington DC and Rivet City, go to south-west and you'll see some more of destoryed nature and wasteland, raiders and wanderers, go to north-east and you'll see more green, more trees, Oasis, and you'll meet Harold :). Go to north-west and you'll see Encalve troops, lots of deadly creatures (deathclaws) and destroyed cities. But you're only 2 hours into it, thats reaaaaaly small amount of time to judge the game.

4.You dont need to use R2, you can shoot in real time, like FPS. And there are really amazing weapons in Fallout universe. I mean REALLY amazing. Lincon's Repeater, Fatman, Wazer rifle, The Therrible Shotgun, Gauss Rifle (included in DLC),Galting Lazer, Alien Blaster, Railway Rifle, Rock it Launcher,....TONS of weapons

5.You are only 2 hours into it...You haven even scratched the surfice of this amazing RPG.

EDIT: when i first got the game i felt the EXACT same way you did, but i just kept on playing and exploring and eventually got really addicted. There is so much stuff to do, to find everything, so many places to see, so many interesting characters to talk, so many diffrent weapons to try, lots of varried enemies to blast with V.A.T.S... incredible game really
