Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is the Wii failing to do/be that keeps it from 100% market share?

What factors do the market want, that Nintendo can't/won't/isn't yet delivering that kept the Wii from taking the last 55% of the market share. Im not talking about making enough consoles. Is it Visuals? Is it the controller? Online play? Consumer inertia? Third party games? If Nintendo gave the market everything it wanted, then the market share of the Wii should be approaching 100%. It isn't, and really I just want to start to understand why its not.

The fact that other companies are making consoles. The Wii could have every awesome aspect, but not have 100% marketshare if another company sells even 1 console.

It could be possible in the future that everyone abandons PS3 and XBox 360 and trades it in for a Wii. The market share of Wii could be 100%.

what do you mean? the marketshare is rising semi-linearly at the moment (i don't have a graph of marketshare to back it up), it isn't asymptote-ing anywhere yet though, thats for sure

As for 100%, i'm sure you don't really mean 100%.. because that would mean everyone would have to sell their ps3's and 360's (e.g. PS2 is at about 70-75% marketshare)

But i'd say because people have different tastes, and the wii isn't for everyone, just as the 360 and ps3 are also not for everybody..

Hrm, i'm actually not sure if i'm answering your question, I don't understand it..

Blame the 360 and PS3.....

Former something....

- I don't like mario (a big minus if your talking about a nintendo console)
- I don't like the controller
- I don't care for motion controls (including sixaxis)
- Games seem oriented towards kids, less towards teens/adults

Yep you are. Its approaching an equilibrium point, probably somewhat above 50% but im unsure how far. The PS2 had 70% market share when the offerings were similar to other consoles, the Wii will probably end up under that, so really I just want to account for that 25% or whatever the final market share ends up at difference between it and the PS2 between their respective generations.

hardcore market, plain and simple. Though they are doubling up this gen, more than previous ones, they are choosing graphics and standard controllers before family friendly entertainment every time.

But the alternative belief, which is being used as an excuse by HD owners, is that the whole Wii market is casual. If this is true then Nintendo have 100% of that market, casual is everyone therefore they have 100% market share.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
