Forums - General - Global Warming. Fact or fiction??

"While the Gangotri has been retreating since measurements began in 1842, the rate of retreat, which was around 62 feet per year between 1935 and 1971, has almost doubled."

It's always retreated, that's fine but why the increased rate in the lat 30 years?

Because since roughly 1850, we have been exiting an abnormaly cold period.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

I don't care if global warming is true or not. Creating cleaner energy solutions and minimising our impact on the world can only be a good thing in the long run, not only for out health but for the health of every species and environment on the planet.

Fiction. if you do some research you'll find that water vapors are the most abundant green house gas and that carbon dioxide is a trace gas and people are only responsible for .2 percent of it. Also its kind of funny knowing that they also predicted global cooling for the same reasons in the 70s..

Predictions.

How do you know? Records don't go back far enough. I don't believe you. I think it's unusually hot. etc etc

I asked why there was an increase in the last 30 years that made a seemingly nice 62 feet increase to 100 feet. Are you saying we are exiting the socalled cold period? What's causing us to come out of it?

1850 you say? Hey, look at that there was a category 7 eruption in 1815, Mount Tambora...weird huh? This volcanic theory is working out. But then a steady fall would be more likely to happen not an increase.

Hmm, pie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age

There is no agreed beginning year to the Little Ice Age, although there is a frequently referenced series of events preceding the known climatic minima. Starting in the 13th century, pack ice began advancing southwards in the North Atlantic, as did glaciers in Greenland. The three years of torrential rains beginning in 1315 ushered in an era of unpredictable weather in Northern Europe which did not lift until the 19th century. There is anecdotal evidence of expanding glaciers almost worldwide. There is anecdotal evidence of expanding glaciers almost worldwide. In contrast, a climate reconstruction based on glacial length[6] shows no great variation from 1600 to 1850, though it shows strong retreat thereafter.

Roughly 1200-1600 AD glaciers increased, 1600-1850 AD fairly stable, afterwards glacial shrinking.

The Earth goes through cooling and warming periods. (real) Scientists aren't sure why, though there are theories. A fairly likely one is the heat from the Sun is not constant, and it varies over periods of several centuries.

So you are basically saying it's comin out of a mini ice age.

I say there are many things. Now if it is coming out of an ice age, surely this means the planet is warming up? Like the entire world on a global scale is warming up.

Hmm, pie.

We got no choice now. Thank christ Obama committed to something with the appointment of energy secretary.

Sceptics will have no choice.

I do think its interesting that his main argument has been to get off reliance on foreign oil, not CO2 cuts, though it is relevent to Iraq, etc.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I think he's refering to me when I said: "How do you know? Records don't go back far enough. I don't believe you. I think it's unusually hot. etc etc "

Now, I understand the use of 'etc' and really it should only be used once but the idea of using it more then once in this instance I am trying to point out how repetative and boring it all sounds (bit of sarcasm thrown in too) when you hear the same things over and over. It is commonly used in human conversations like that, just's just carried to writen text as well.
