IGN announced the winners for the best of 2008 for the DS (also for the PSP, but I haven't read them yet).

I'm very happy with them because the best game for me stole the show

I'm not gonna list all the awards, but for those who want to know, The World Ends With You won (very deservedly) Best RPG, Best Story, Best New IP and Game of the Year

The other nominees for GOTY were

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
Space Invaders Extreme

What do you think? Haven't played any of the other nominees, so I can't comment much

I'm disappointed in IGN they did not even put Layton in as a nominee...

Good choices by IGN. It's so hard to narrow down to five with the DS because of how much quality software it has.
