Forums - Gaming Discussion - Theory: MS Is A Major Part of Why the Japanese Market is Down.

He is partially right, i think. Microsoft basically introduced PC software devs into the console market, and Western gamers are eating it up, throwing off Japanese efforts on the PS360.

Wii has definitely been Japanese development's saving grace, seeing Nintendo lead, SEGA follow, and other companies starting to put their best foot forward will help restore them somewhat.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Well, the OP has a point. The Japanese refuses to buy anything gaming related coming from the west. It's like one of their national pride. I'm sure that for each game released on 360, if that game woud have been released on either the Wii or Ps3, we would have seen a far larger boost than we've seen.

Well they certainly tried that. See "Eternal Sonata".

OHZES NOES ITS A PORTS

I know. But it still didn't see a massive boost.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

@Zim: Thank you, that's a helpful post.

@S.T.A.G.E.: Here, I'll make a more clear comparison. I should've probably made my own seperate thread for this, because people are so misinformed at what games the Japanese seem to like (according to sales, anyway). I put future releases at the end and in italics, let me know if I left something out.

Main Japanese X360 exclusives: Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Infinte Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey, Dead or Alive 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, Star Ocean 4, Blue Dragon 2

Comparable last gen games:
Tales of Rebirth (best selling tales) - 0.59m, Tales of the Abyss (second best tales) - 0.57
Dead or Alive 2 (best selling DoA) - 0.38m
Ninja Gaiden - 0.07m (PS3 version sold 0.09m)
Star Ocean 3 - 0.55m
All other JRPG's not named FF/KH/DQ/MH are below 0.47m.

Main Japanese PS3 exclusives: Hot Shots Golf 5, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, Yakuza Kenzan, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 3, White Knight Chronicles, Final Fantasy XIII/v, Gran Turismo 5

Comparable last gen games:
Hot Shots Golf 3 - 1.39m, Hot Shots Golf 4 - 1.34m
Metal Gear Solid 2 - .87m, Metal Gear Solid 3 - .86m
Gran Turismo 3 - 1.89, Gran Turismo 4 Prologue - 0.79m, Gran Turismo 4 - 1.16
Yakuza 1 - .74m, Yakuza 2 - .75m
Final Fantasy X - 3.02m, Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.41m, Final Fantasy XII - 2.42m

FFXIIIv will most likely place between main FF's and KH, so
Kingdom Hearts 1 - 1.24m, Kingdom Hearts 2 - 1.16m

The 360 games are trumped in popularity by nearly every PS3 exclusive, except Blue Dragon, which is hard to measure. Anyway, Eternal Sonata, a decent sized JRPG, was a timed exclusive for the 360. When the game became availible for PS3 owners (you know, those biased Japanese), the sales showed how little they cared about it. JRPG's are simply not as important as people think they are, and it's all the 360 has.

so what is the origin of the "360".... or is that just to sound "cool" too.

In generating a name for the system, the team threw out Xbox 2. "We've shifting the power of the gaming systems from technology to hardware to the gamer being the center of the industry, and Xbox 2 just sounds like it fits into that old scheme. We threw it out."

Actually, this is kind of a weird look at things. The only company to use the "1, 2, 3" numbering system has been Sony; PS2, PS3, (even the PSP models to a certain extent PSP-2000, PSP-3000)

All other companies have constantly stuck with using completely some new word for each system; Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, DS Lite, DSi, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, Dreamcast, etc.

Now we have Xbox, and Xbox 360, so where did this idea that straight numbering was the conventional method?

Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!

Currently wrapped up in: Half Life, Portal, and User Created Source Mods
Games I want: (Wii)Mario Kart, Okami, Bully, Conduit,  No More Heroes 2 (GC) Eternal Darkness, Killer7, (PS2) Ico, God of War1&2, Legacy of Kain: SR2&Defiance

My Prediction: Wii will be achieve 48% market share by the end of 2008, and will achieve 50% by the end of june of 09. Prediction Failed.

I haven't read through all the pages so apologies if someone else has made this point. Bigjons op shows a typical misinformed westerners viewpoint of Japan. Japanese people have no bias against western products in the slightest.

As a matter of fact often the best way to enter any industry in Japan is to be successful in the Uk or america, france etc go over there and let it be known you are successful there.

The reason MS are struggling in Japan is because the xbox isn't popular there. That sounds silly but basically Japan more than any country I have ever been to, being popular is important. If you can't get popular very quickly you are going to struggle to do it at all. If the first xbox had been released with a lineup similar to the 360 then it would probably have ended up making the xbox brand very popular there.

An interesting point I always find is the uk in a clothes shop the assitant will usually say to me ''Oh that really suits you'' or some other such compliment. In Japan they will almost always say ''That is our most popular item''.

People use apple as an example of western companies succeeding in Japan with the ipod. If apple had gone in and struggled with the ipod for 5 years then made a big push to make it popular it wouldn't have worked anywhere near as well.

The fact is it appears japan's hardcore gaming otaku have already bought the xbox. Thus why games there can have such a HUGE attach rate. The 'real' gamers as you call them do have a 360. However the hardcore market is very small (im assuming 90% of the hardcore market would fall within males between the age of 15-35). Just think of the demographics of japan and you realise how small it really is. If necessary I will get the population stats and show you.

The casual gaming crowd in Japan haven't picked up on the 360 because it isn't popular enough. The 360 may have picked up a lot of the core gaming titles. But those aren't the titles that sell a system to 10million+ people. If MS had gone in with the original xbox with enough games to sell it to the core gamers instantly, advertised it heavily and then played up on it selling out etc then they could have been far far more successful.

I also don't think MS securing games like LO, BD etc has meant that suddenly people won't buy another console.

you are the third or fourth person to mention the ipod. I should have narrowed it just games. Japanese, as others have pointed out, see there status as gaming "gods" with a sense of national pride.

Also traditionaly the East has been very closed to the west. During the late 1800's Japan was the only country to become open to western thought and trade. That is why they grew to be such a beast during WW2.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Right now the 360 has THE best core Japanese lineup. Either you have admit that the Japanese dont want american gaming products in general, or you have to say all the games suck, and there is nothing on the 360 for them. You cant have it both ways.

I tend to think they have a good Japanese lineup. So I believe that Japanese people just dont want an american console.

You think they have a good Japanese lineup, but that doesn't matter, because you're American. The Japanese don't agree (that it's better than the PS3's, anyway).

Ok then MS is just stupid and they went out and paid a bunch of devs to bring over japanese games that japanese dont like...

I see a lot of people generalizing the entire Japanese population. Good to know stereotyping is still alive and strong.
