Forums - Sales - The November NPD Thread (USA data for 4 weeks ending Nov 29 in 6 hours)

Wait...

Wii sold 2M, right?

The average American home has ~ 3.33 people (little under 4 in established families, but not all are, and the others take the average down a lot).

So ~ 100M homes, right?

Subtract old Wii owners, and you get 85M (little less).

So ~ 2.33% of the homes that didn't own a Wii bought a Wii this month? Insane.

Wii Music "undertracked" by 33% (or NPD was 50% higher). That's a lot.

NPD was 32% higher on MKWii

The rest is within 20%, and some is spot on. Very good indeed.

Still, this shows that VGChartz is biased against Wii - no doubt about it!

Did you purposely ignore the biggest difference?

*Looks again*

Gears 2 - NPD 1.56M, VGC 2.26M

I misread last time (thought it was 1.96M). My bad

So Gears 2: 30% lower on NPD (VGC was 45% higher).

CoD 5 360 is 15% off (high side)

Wii Fit is 15% off (high side)

CoD 5 Ps3 is 15% off (high side)

World Tour is off by... OMG! You're right. VGC *0.9 = 194K. NPD = 475K. They're 2.4 times larger on it! HUGE.

Resistance is less than 10% off, so is L4D.

You're right, I missed Gears and World Tour.

Also, Wii Music is off by more. Forgot *0.9, so 173K vs 297K is 71% higher on NPD.

Oh, I get it. You meant the Wii HW. Well, it is only 25% off, and thus not the biggest change.

Pachter's response:

http://techland.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/12/11/nintendo-wii-officially-recession-proof/

Analysts were taken by surprise by how well the $249 console has performed in a flagging economy. “Two million? You sure? This is mind-boggling,” said Michael Pachter, a top industry analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities. “At least Nintendo is meeting demand.”

Pachter says it’s because people are now choosing a Wii over a latte. “There’s a solid middle class that’s going to make substitutions to buy games. Now it’s buy a Wii and don’t eat out for a month, or don’t take that ski trip,” he said. “Or cut out Starbucks.”

Which is why I said that it should hit some sort of saturation point soon. It's just scary, when you think of it like that.

As i mentioned before this November in USA alone 3MILLION people almost bought a new console, and not 1 of them was a PS3, that should speak volumes to you about what the general public think about the console.

Uhh, that it is too expensive?  Has anyone even tried doubting that?  If the PS3 was even coming close to the 360's sales right now in the current economy than something would be wrong with people.

It's all about the game.

Pachter is a silly, silly man. This isn't meeting demand. Not quite.

Seriously though is this the highest November in the US ever?

Yes. Pachter is indeed silly. He makes it sound like them buying a wii is a bad thing.

And I echo your question. Is this the highest november ever? I'm guessing it is...

Yes, it is the highest total volume of sales in November ever and the Wii is the highest single selling home console in November ever.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Impressive Wii numbers. Pretty pleased to see Wii Music selling well.

Well, for comparison's sake, here is how VGC compare to NPD this month :

NPD (USA) VGC (America*0,9) %
Playstation 2 206 273 +32,52
Playstation 3 378 395 +4,5
PSP 421 430 +2,14
Xbox 360 836 853 +2,03
Wii 2040 1600 -21,57
DS 1570 1431 -8,85

GEARS OF WAR 2 (360) 1560 2041 +30,83
CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR (360) 1410 1465 +3,9
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE (Wii) 796 458 -42,46
WII FIT (Wii) 697 800 +14,78
MARIO KART (Wii) 637 422 -33,75
CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR (PS3) 597 604 +1,17
GUITAR HERO WORLD TOUR (Wii) 475 264 -44,42
LEFT 4 DEAD (360) 410 320 -21,95
RESISTANCE 2 (PS3) 385 367 -4,68
WII MUSIC (Wii) 297 207 -30,3

Of course, without a 'Black Friday' in Canada and Mexico, the 0.9 multiplier is probably far from reality.
