Forums - Gaming - Is the mass market now purchasing consoles now??

I've heard that at the begining of every console life...a fanboy segement purchases the console...and after about a week or month or year...the fanboy segement drops and the mass market starts to pick up the rest of console sales...Is it true?? and is the mass market now purchasing the PS3 and 360?

They're definitely purchasing the Wii but the 360 is mainly hardcore shooter fans (Look how well Viva Pinata sold) and the PS3 is hard to justify for those who aren't really into the few main titles what with the cost and the non-exclusivity of many games. The mainstream entry barrier is cash (especially in Europe: $800 PS3, $560 Xbox 360 Premium and $360 Wii) or lack of casual games.

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

Its beginning. The Wii was first console to hit mainstream. The 360 is beginning. I get a pretty good grasp for Mainstream based on a few of my friends.

Up until these past few months most of my friends had no intrest in any system AT ALL. We played the 360, but up until I bought one, we really weren't that into it. Now that I've got one they are more interested and with this upcoming holiday season they're getting pretty excited.

The only turnoff was price at $399 for Premium (all three of them would have bought a 360 for $299 if it was available), but at $349 it makes it more attractive.

None of them have bought in yet, but plan to do sometime between now (because of madden) or September (Halo 3 obviously).

Wii and 360, yeah. PS3... not so much. Not even all the "fanboys" have bot PS3's yet. Or as those who have had marketing classes like to call them "Early Adopters" and "Brand Loyalists".

The "Mainstream" usually won't make a large run at a product until it hits that sweet spot price point. Which for videogame consoles seems to be around 300 dollars. Hence why the Wii is selling more mainstream then everyone else. Of course hype can increase that pricepoint... but hasn't so far for the PS3.

Yes but only the Wii.

Ahm... the DS? It´s a mass market phenomenon, forget about all the other crappy consoles, the DS makes them all look like hardcore gamer items (not the Wii maybe...)

The Wii is hitting mainstream pretty hard, and I think the PS3 would be getting more attention toward it if the entry cost barrier was set a little/lot lower.

The DS isn't really mass market in North America. In Japan it is though.

The PS3 could hit a mass market level down the road if the price of it drops to entry level blu-ray players. But it won't happen this year or next cause most people are still content with DVD players. However if it is the cheapest blu-ray player in 2009 then yes it could reach a mass market level.

The wii, is getting sales because of mario and price basicly everyone that had a GC is getting a wii, and some ps2 owners.

The ps3 can easily outsell the wii if it were at the same price. But people arent rich.

The 360 even though its cheaper than the ps3, is still lossing market share from the ps3. its basicly doomed.
