I don't think Microsoft leaving the console business would be a good thing since competition usually pushes companies to do better.

To restore goodwill they need to get systems back to customers very quickly and ensure that people won't have overheating problems. If they get this problem fixed this year it's likely in a year or so it wouldn't be a big issue for potential customers.

I think it would be a great idea for them to leave the console war, the ps1 only went of against the SNES and the games were huge. If it wasnt for microsoft we would be seeing sales like this

ps3=15m

wii=10m

WHAT???? PS1 was going also against the dreamcast... and in term of line up even if it was a small (which mainely was the problem) the average game quality was way over PS1... Sony never diserved their results.... they just got lucky that Sega management was shit and nintendo entered a bad period....

and about MS they have been doing video games way before Sony entered the console war.... and usually really good games... and even now their gaming distribution list is of rather good quality.... but with age of empire, flight simulator, the madness collection.... they were way more in the market than people seem to realise... without talking about all the pads and joystiq they have been doing for decades now....

if they are loosing money like that it's especially to come hard in the console market.... they will be loosing money until they take over... and I don't see them quitting... on that market you invest billion of dollars over a time periode of at least 20 years.... so it's far from over...

don't forget that it's still one of the bigest company in the world... like the USA they might have debt like crazy but it's still nothing compare to their overall value.... they still make a net income of almost 17X what sony does

Yea sure...according to wikipedia

sony is worth more than 68billion since 2006

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony

Microsoft is worth 51 billion since 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft

I cant find the 07 sony numbers but I dont think its 17billion lower. Microsoft is a SOFTWARE company, they are not hardware, they should get out of the console race, since they dont know what they are doing when building a console.

you really have to learn how to read a financial statement..... you are quoting the revenue...... which means absolutely nothing...... I was comparing net income... which actually how much  money they are making and it's 17X over sony acoording to your same links..... MS US $14.06 billion (2007) Sony ($842 million USD) (2007)

it's the net income which is important... it's what you actually make after fixed and variable cost........ here is a link if you want to understand better http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_income

next time read all the way.... now even if microsoft was loosing 10 billion on XB they would still be making about 3X more money than Sony

sorry to be off subject I had to say it lol.... I have nothing against you Leo-j... you most likely a cool kid... but you should check your info twice before posting....
no harm done though....

so yeah a swap would be great.... I'd like an advice on that though

"and once the falcon is ready.... just swap it with the future XB being send for repairs.... it might then explain why the extension is costing so much.... because I don't see how adding a heatsink and shipping handling would cost that much.... if every 10+ million consoles were repaired it means it would cost more than a 100 bucks to them per unit (regarding what they said it would cost to extend to 3 years)... that number sounds really high to me.... admitting it takes 2 hours to fix one and the guys is payed 30 bucks an hour it leaves more than 40 bucks for the heatsink and S&H... that number doesn't sounds right to me and I took a 100% failure case scenario....
I'm probably dreaming about the swap but it's more accurate to me regarding what they said...."

I would think the main reason the old 90day warranty cards are still in the boxes is, they had shipped 10 million consoles by january 07. so that means since january, most consoles that people bought were MADE in 2006. Microsoft doesn't want to recall those boxes just to shove an extra paper in there, i guess.

but yeah I agree with your instant exchange idea. it basically describes Nintendo's policy for broken consoles (credit card, they send replacement + box, don't charge you for 30 days)

They won't ever do what needs to be done to restore goodwill. Ms never really has much good will with any of their products.

Recall the 360 is the onll way to do it.

It's not a problem the marketers can solve. Marketing can only promise things, the problem is Microsoft didn't deliver on their promises.

Microsoft needs to FIX THE DAMN THING. Period. They need to fix the RRoD, fix the disk scratching, fix the heatsink, and whatever else is wrong with the system. They need to prove to me, the average consumer that their system will not cook itself to death and chew up my disc media. Anything less is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

What's funny is that even with all these problems it's still kicking the PS3's ass.  Look at last week's sales, dispite the PS3 price cut and the impact it had on sales the 360 is now set to overtake it again (especially considering today's announced pricecut).  Imagine how pwned the PS3 would be getting now if the 360 never had hardware problems.

"If U were MS, what would you do to restore goodwill?"

My first thought when I saw this was "Hardly anyone even bought Fuzion Frenzy 2, so it souldn't be that hard to restore good will"

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Can you even count ?

.......Japan, USA, others
PS3 37.5k 38k 36k = 111.5
360 3.5k 35k 34k = 72.5

Imagine, are you a child ? how about imagine how pwned 360 would be if PS3 was not delayed due to BR manufactoring problems.

PS3 is kickin 360 ass even while its in a software drought and costing as much as $200 more then the cheepest 360!

Wow the PS3 is kicking the 360 ass for what like two weeks because of a price drop and a semi major title released in Japan. The 360 sales will pick up next week once its price drop happens and start kicking the PS3 ass again for the rest of the year.
