Forums - Sales - Just How Did Sony Topple It's Console Empire with PS3?

Price is only one factor. To make a console to appeal to everyone, you have to have games for everyone. Price affected both sides of the PS3's poor sales. It cost to much to buy, it cost to much to make games for. Not enought people could afford to purchase it, so not enough developers and publishers could afford to chance spending money to learn how to develop for it. Only the elite could afford it, so only games for the elite made sense to make. No games for the masses, no interest from the non elite.

It's a giant rolling snowball effect.

The real question is how to stop the snowball.

After November 2008 NPD, PS3 sits only 400k ahead of Gamecube launch-aligned. And it looks to be behind after December; Gamecube had a very good third Christmas, and PS3 probably won't.

And to put that in a bigger perspective, Nintendo made money on every single Gamecube ever sold, while losses on every PS3 have lost every cent Sony's gaming division made in it's first twelve years.

What can Sony do to pull out of this tailspin?

They didn't really topple it. nearly 18 million consoles isn't something to be ashamed of. Sure, the others are doing better, but that doesn't mean you're doing bad.

If the world record for 100 meter dash is 10 seconds and you get there third with 11, does that make you slow? No, it only makes you slower than the competition, but you're still fast.

It does make you slow if you were taking $3 billion dollar steroids to become faster.

Wow. What an awesome thread. Great discussions with the OP. Nice to see.

Wouldn't that just make you dummer?

I can't even comment, it speaks for itself.

I disagree, its an UNDERPRICED SYSTEM for what you get, dont troll the console without knowing what you get.

Because I have a blu-ray player, a 360, a wireless adapter, XBOX LIVE, rechargeble batters all for what?? $500-600 dollars??

You get all of that I mentioned in a PS3 for $399.

Also nobody is going to pay 400 dollars for a video game console, but dont say the ps3 doesnt give you a bang for your buck.

You don't have what X360 or Wii owners have: Games. The Wii has those Blue Ocean games that everyone goes ga-ga for this generation. The X360 has everything the PS3 has at half the price and has a much bigger library, too.

It doesn't matter if the Playstation 3 has a built in satillite dish, and can speak to the dead. At $399.99 for a game system, it's too much. Most consumers look at 2 things: Games and Price. If the local Target, Walmart, or Gamestop has a selection for X360 or Wii games' that's twice as big...Guess which one they're going to get (especially at 33-50% lower prices for the hardware).

Sorry, Leo-J. I don't buy SDF excuses about it being underpriced. $400 for a video game system is too much. The X360 @ $400, Saturn, Neo Geo, and tons of other systems taught us that. Video game systems just isn't the kind of market that needs expensive hardware, regardless of features. That's what makes it overpriced - the fact that it's $399.99. Not the features. I couldn't even justify $399.99 for my Xbox 360 @ launch...Which is why I paid under $200 for it.

You gotta stop think that the PS3 is missing good games. I've seen twice now say that the difference in games between PS3 and 360 is huge!
