ioi has added numbers for Europe/Australia/Others dating back to the PS2 launch in 2000.  That means it is now possible to see worldwide sales comparing this generation to last generation.

Through 289 weeks (~5.5 years) PS2 sell through to gamers worldwide was ~ 88 million.  Since, sales have climbed even higher (PS2 still does 250k between the USA/Americas & Japan each month - 7+ years after launch in Japan, and nearly 7 years after the USA/Americas launch).

Through nearly 1/2 of the 289 weeks, DS is outpacing PS2 anywhere from 5% to 25% during the comparable week.

Wii, through 33 weeks, is even outpacing the DS - with sales of over 10,000,000 likely when data for the Americas & Japan comes in (by Wendsday August 8, 2007).  DS took over 50 weeks to hit 10,000,000, and PS2 took over 60 weeks to hit 10,000,000.

For those questioning the validity of the comparison since PS2 had a staggered launch (Japan first - in March 2000, then the West), take a look at the European, Japanese, and Americas comparisons as well.

In Japan, Wii is currently outpacing DS (but unlikely to see the same level of monstrous growth in the near future).  Initially, PS2 was outpacing Wii - however, at week 33, Wii has essentially caught up to PS2, and will soon pass PS2 in the comparable time frame.

As for others, PS2 and Wii have such a similar sales pattern that the lines actually overlap most of the time.  DS fluctuates from ahead of both, to behind both, depending on the week and season.

In the Americas, Wii is outpacing PS2 slightly (5%-15%), which puts it ahead on a worldwide basis.

That means even if a true alignment is impossible when comparing the PS2 to Wii launch...

so this means no more people thinking that the PS3 is doing as well as the PS2? Hooray!

But this looks like a pretty huge update and a massive amount of work, great work guys. I know you folks put a lot of work into making this a great site and it probably sucks to have people demean it without even giving it a chance but I think I speak for everyone in the community when I say we appreciate the work you guys do.

wow, looking at the chart for wii vs PS2 the Wii was behind and is caught up fast and the lines are crossing right now and the Wii is trending higher than the PS2.

On-topic: I just checked the graphs myself too, and it's amazing how the Wii is selling in comparison. It's not that the PS3 is doing bad... it's that Wii is doing way too good.

The charts seem to be a little funny. The chart for ALL says about 88 million. But the individual charts say 19 for Japan, 37 for others and 39 for NA. Together those add up to around 95 million, not 88

The charts only go upto 289 worldwide Stof. What were the weekly totals in regions?

Are you accounting for the staggered launch?
