Oh good now I can let loose because you completely misunderstood your own specialty
Go figure
Anyway:
If you study literature you know in the first place that "classics" are rarely equated with their contemporary receptions, which is to say that the stuff we love today may not have been well-praised back in the day, or worse, may have been super popula (ala Shakespeare, who commited the sin of being super popular). Perceptions of a work tend to change over time, and that's true of any art form: it's why Norman Rockwell is beginning to be acknowledged as a legitimately great painter instead of a hack. And changing perceptions of a work means that the meter by which these works are weighed cannot be objective. If it were, it would not change; as it is, it only reflects the taste of the times.
Second, Shakespeare is the most important writer in the English language because he is the most influential, whose stories have affected contemporary understandings of literature in very plain, traceable ways. It is influence which is the only true objective standard of greatness in literature, not the quality of a work, and influence often has very little to do with how critics receive it. Why, you ask, can influence come from things which critics do not like, which are not even part of the critical dialogue? It's simple.
Creators, authors, and writers do not tend to be critics. They are consumers of the media in which they participate. It is what the people love, not what the critics love, which determines what does or does not become immortal.
That's right: gamerankings and metacritic mean nothing when it comes to establishing the greatness of a franchise or any single game. Nobody cares what the critics think, and the larger critical dialogue will come from the consumers, not the scholars. Wii Sports was acknowledged for what it did by the Game Developers Conferece in 2007, and that is reflected in the general population's consensus that it is the game to own this generation, above all others.
I am not saying that the critical discourse has no affect, certainly not. Down the line it will be the scholars who introduce the learners to the old works, but it will be by their standards of greatness at the time, not ours. And that will change as the years pass.
So, no. Gamerankings and metacritic are not what determines the greatness of a game. They never have. They never will.
There is no "objective" greatness. There is merely consensus, and this consensus is fragile and temporary.
Everyone, cool their jets. Now.
This thread is spiraling out of control: people have gone from taking little jabs at each other, to bigger jabs, to outright insults, and we'll quickly approach the point where multiple people will be in ban territory.
Let's just agree with these points:
1) It's nice for Wii owners to get good games. Hurray for them!
2) This likely portends well for Japanese-centric, third support for the Wii more generally.
3) This has little or no effect on Hardcore Western third party support. Most of the biggest western third party games are still on PS3/360.
Those all seem like reasonable points. Does anyone want to argue with them? No? Good. You're welcome to discuss DQ X and the possibilities on the Wii, and any of the finer points of the statements above (how greatly will this effect Wii support from Japan? What would it take to shift western third parties noticably towards the Wii?). However, these gradually escalating insults are going to get everyone in trouble in a hurry. No more list wars, please.
Everyone can enjoy the systems they enjoy! Hurray! We're all happy, right? Right?

Sorry. Didn't realize I was stepping out of line
Whew! Now that that's over, who wants cake?!?!?!?!

Hey Onna, are you still reading this thread? Can I get your opinion on this picture, if so?
Anyone else? Thoughts?

I kind of hope they stick with the traiditional turn-based style for this game as well. I would like to see if it is any better to use the wiimote as a pointer rather than scrolling through menus. I suspect it will be about the same, but the stylus helps the DS out a lot in this department.
Soriku would you believe I was just reading that
And it certainly seems possible, though I don't know where they would start and how far they would go.
